Happy Life, Happy Witch

Jumping right into this banger of a comic book, we start off with Wanda Maximoff living a peaceful life in Lotkill, New York. She runs a magical shop with Darcy Lewis and assists people who have no other options and appears through a portal called the Last Door. Her goal is to help people that need help and she takes a great pride in that. She’s happy and at peace in her quiet life after having so much happen in the past few weeks. (Catch up on the reviews for Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver if you’re unfamiliar here!)

The End of All Things

But her quiet and peaceful life becomes threatened when a bright red opening appears in the sky. It’s a dimensional tear and what’s on the other side is here for the Scarlet Witch. Wanda fights for the life she loves, but it’s a gruesome fight. The creatures that come out of the dimensional tear aren’t even the villain she should be worrying about. The only option she has is to use the power of the Darkhold to destroy the Griever at the End of All Things.

The Art

The art of Scarlet Witch #1 is phenomenal! Jacopo Camagni truly understood the assignment when drawing this. Camagni’s drawings with the gorgeous color work from Frank Williams, every panel is eye catching and a work of art. The page where Wanda summons the power of the Darkhold is haunting and beautiful with the bright reds and pinks and the black claws around her! Also, I can’t not mention the cover art and the variant covers. They’re all gorgeous and each one feels so authentic to the character of Wanda Maximoff.

The Writing

Scarlet Witch #1 feels like a full course meal in terms of everything it gives you in the storyline. The drama, the heartbreak, the happiness, all of it is enthralling. Steve Orlando knocked it out of the park with this comic book.

Wanda’s seriousness of the situation juxtaposed Darcy’s humorous quips only adds to the story and makes it feel bigger than it already is. Wanda trying her hardest to fight the creatures from the tear while yelling for people to get to safety was a great way to show how determined to keep her home safe. Her inner dialogue was perfect for the character. These are just a few examples of what makes this first installment of Scarlet Witch excellent.

Final Thoughts

I think this new Scarlet Witch run will be fantastic if it’s anything like the first installment. Scarlet Witch #1 was an extremely strong start. The creative team really showed their talents with this. As someone that’s a big Scarlet Witch fan, I can honestly say that I loved it and I can’t wait to read the next issue!

I give this a 9 out of 10
