The Blood Hunt event has been such a wild thrill ride. I’m loving seeing all these Marvel characters deal with the darkness of the sun being blot out with the Darkforce, giving the vampires the ability to attack whenever and wherever they want. Wolverine: Blood Hunt #1 does a great job showing it from Wolverine’s perspective and shows it’s not just the vampires Wolverine should worry about.

Just a guy in a bar

The comic book opens with Logan, also known as Wolverine, finding solace in his usual haunt, a bar, where he anticipates the arrival of a friend who he believes can aid him in putting an end to the vampire chaos. However, instead of his friend’s arrival, former military police, now turned savage vampires, make their presence known. Intriguingly, these vampire officers seem to be on a mission directed at Logan, even going as far as possessing a weapon tailor-made for him.

In the nick of time

Logan’s awaited friend arrives at the bar, revealing herself to be Nightguard, also known as Louise by Wolverine. Just in the nick of time, Louise aids Logan by dismantling the custom weapon aimed at him. His choice couldn’t have been more fitting, as Louise, a vampire with her thirst managed, proves to be the perfect ally to tackle the vampire predicament. United, they embark on a quest to uncover why the vampires are targeting Logan. I have to say, I really like these two working together. I think they make a great team.

He’s the best in the world at what he does…

But can Logan be the best vampire hunter in the world? I’d say he’s doing pretty well so far. Once they hit the road, they run into some familiar mercenaries from Logan’s past. Come to find out, the professional killers were sent by someone as far as Team X in Logan’s past. All of these vampire attacks was a ploy to bring Logan to the wrong side of the fight.

The Art

There’s so many things I love about the art of Wolverine: Blood Hunt #1. The first being Wolverine wearing my favorite tan and brown suit and he looked fantastic! It fit into the story so well with the dark and gloomy backgrounds which fit perfectly for a Blood Hunt story. Another thing is how detailed each action scene looked. You could see every bloody part of the fights with the vampires. Each fight scene had a beautiful burst of bright colors juxtaposed with the grittiness of the background.

The Writing

Tom Waltz does it again with showing how talented he is when writing these dark stories. After reading TMNT: The Last Ronin II Re-Evolution(you can read my review of it HERE), which was written by Tom Waltz and Kevin Eastman(who is one of the incredibly talented variant cover artists for Wolverine: Blood Hunt #1), I knew I had to check this comic out! The writing, the dialogue, the story, all marvelous! Waltz does a fantastic job showing Wolverine as a killing machine but also as someone who will second guess himself if he’s doing the right thing.

Final thoughts

This was such a fun comic book to jump into. The story is so captivating and keeps you hooked to every panel. The art is superb, which is clea to see just by looking at the cover art and variant covers. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Wolverine: Blood Hunt!

I give this a 10 out of 10
