Garth Ennis is a legend for a reason. The man is able to create these stories that are unique, fun, and hit on serious topics.
In Get Fury #1, we meet an older Vietnamese general, Letrong Giap, who is regaling the audience about his time in the wars dating back decades. Now, he’s disillusioned with life, his country and honestly waiting to die.
All that’s left is “mischief.”
But before his body finally fails, he’s more than happy to entertain us with stories about Nick Fury and Frank Castle.
“Whatever Ire I might have felt has long since faded,” he says. “But try to kill a man and fail, and understand he meant the same for you … It is a thing that leaves its own peculiar scar.”
Now, before we go any further, it’s key to know this is a Max comic from Marvel, so it’s explicit in nature and for mature audiences.
There are several F bombs, gore and killing that are not for the faint of heart or those under 18.
The Punisher before the Punisher
The first lengthy exchange we see is from Castle, as he’s leading a team in Vietnam and showing his true grit.
In the coolest, most relaxed way possible, he backs up one of his soldiers and then leaves on a mission. Even before he was an anti-hero, this guy was no joke.
We next meet Fury in the middle of the jungle, captured and being sold.
We then head back to Castle who is now getting the orders of his mission – to kill Nick Fury!!
Wait, what?!?! Well, the reason is Fury’s intelligence clearance and knowledge that the government does NOT want getting into the hands of the enemy.
“You’re said to be the best shot currently in country,” one agent tells Castle.
Fury, the War Hero
We see Fury’s grit as well, leading the two men who were captured along with him. But things quickly turn.
One falls and is literally put into a dirt hole while he’s still breathing. (Told you this was mature.)
Fury makes the tough call and tells the other soldier to shut it and wait for the right time to make a move.
But he does not listen to Fury and gets chopped to bits for his bravery. (Again, very mature.)
And with that, we are left with a teaser from issue #2.
Final Thoughts – 8.5/10
This is going to be one hell of a ride.
The art, the dialogue, the historical significance, it’s all there to pull you in if you’re a fan.
Some folks might not be into this book, but that’s the point of Max comics, it’s for a certain audience, not for everyone.
I for one, can NOT wait to see how this all goes down.
