The Story:
The fight against Orchis has come to the Impossible City. With the Avengers split into two different teams taking out Orchis targets, it is up to the Impossible City to fend off a Sentinel attack and protect the Mutant refugees taking shelter there.
The Writing:
Event Tie-in books are usually difficult. They sideline the current story and feel out of place, slamming the brakes on whatever is happening in the series and making a sudden turn into a different story all together. However, thanks to a bit of great writing from Jed MacKay, this didn’t feel out of place.
The Avengers should be involved in a conflict that is as important as this one. Also, a quick throw away line from Iron Man in an earlier issue was able to set up the timing for the Avengers to get involved. MacKay also showcased his talent for great dialogue here with notable moments from multiple characters, not the least of which being 3-D Man! Way to make me care about 3-D Man Mr. MacKay!
The Art:
The artwork on display is fantastic as always. Action and emotion are rendered to great effect as this story moves from location to location at a rapid pace. Black Panther has been the standout character for this story so far.
His costume and the way he comes in and out of shadow is just great. On top of the interior art, the cover is wonderful. Great composition, colors that pop, and the Stark Sentinels are just too cool.
The Verdict: 8.5/10
As far as event tie-in books goes, this is top notch. If a reader has not been keeping up with the ‘Fall of X’ storyline, this issue and the last issue were enough to bring them up to speed so they could enjoy the ride.
My biggest problem with this issue was that the story is moving on from the ‘Fall of X’ story. I liked seeing The Avengers dealing with a current threat, so far this series has felt a little too far removed from the rest of the Marvel Universe. It was nice to see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes efficiently taking care of business against a radical threat to the Mutants.
