New To Dark Spaces
This is actually my first time reading a Dark Spaces book, and obviously the first time reading from the Dungeon series. With this issue being the conclusion to the story, it would seem that I was at a disadvantage in reviewing this book. I didn’t find that to be the case. From beginning to end I felt like I had a good grasp on the story. That’s an impressive feat by any writing and art team, so kudos to Snyder and Sherman.
Upon finishing this issue, I felt that it would be an injustice not to go back and absorb the story as a whole, and so I did. Snyder’s thrilling tale was a thing of beauty. The psychology of these characters is explored with finesse and their arcs and developments are masterfully curated. I now find myself a fan of everyone involved.
Dark Spaces: Dungeons and Dread
Our current issue finds Bohdi desperately searching the dungeon for a young boy named Cal. As he searches, he finds more victims, most elderly, that have been locked away for decades. Most are emaciated and pitiful, seeking either freedom or death. Snyder builds some great tension throughout this moment as does Sherman with his environmental designs that would trigger anyone with claustrophobia.

One Bohdi is within sight if Cal’s cell, the action and violence crank up. The Keep attacks Bohdi brutally with a hammer and disorienting lights. It’s a great action sequence with some chilling dialogue from the villain. Even the Keeps mask makes the readers uncomfortable, even worse if you suffer from trypophobia. It’s clever and well done the way Snyder and Sherman work in this trigger moments for phobias throughout, keeping the reader on edge.
I Didn’t See That Coming
After a surprising assist, Bohdi finally saves Cal and we can cut to the happy ending wrap up…or can we? Theres a 2 month time jump here where Bohdi arrives to check up on Cal and his family. The dialogue and pacing of the conversation between Bohdi and Cal’s father Tyler is a thing of beauty. I was hanging on every word, savoring every little emotion, my eyes getting bigger and bigger as Bohdi talked everything out. The suspense was to die for. Just when the reader thinks that they can die a pretty bow onto the story, everything spirals out of control and the ending is something you have to experience for yourself!
Everything Points To 9.5/10
Scoot Snyder’s story telling goes into so much depth without bogging down the pacing. Bohdi is a character with so much going on, he’s so complex and real. The horror elements shine and the twist at the end is the perfect exclamation point to the series. One of the hardest things in writing to do is to end a story. I see some of the best in the business fumble it all the time, but not Snyder.
Hayden Sherman’s art style lends so well to this kind of story. His action flows methodically and the characters show you nuance with their eyes. That’s a tough skill to master. Patricio Depeche’s colors can’t be ignored either. The watercolor like style brings an eerie and dystopian feel to the work. Shadow and light are big elements in this issue as well and he handles that tough task with ease.
