How Good Are The Dead X-Men?
I’ve been on this book since Dead X-Men #1 and I have been singing it’s praises all along the way! Dead X-Men #3 drops this week and just like you, I was curious as to whether or not this thing was gonna hold up and continue to deliver. Actually, to be fully transparent here I was confident that it absolutely would, but did it disappoint?
The answer is no. Steve Foxe continues to deliver one of my favorite X-Men limited series in recent memory. It feels so fresh and I’m invested in every single panel. These characters are a blast to read and they form a really great team. I know it’s hard to believe considering there’s no huge X-Men mainstays present, but they feel so organic as a team and it just clicks for me.
I’ve stated in earlier reviews of this series that I really feel grounded in this X-Men story. There are so many timelines running together in several different X-Books right now and it can get complicated. Dead X-Men feels like the one constant among all of that chaos.
What Is Going On With the Rise and Fall of the X-Men Universe?!
Next Stop: Terminator Moira
Right from the start this issue is a blast. The team is still jumping through time a space, looking to gather intel on a way to stop the Dominion from destroying the world and wiping out the mutant race. Every stop they make is closer and closer to Moira in one of her lives and this one is a doozy. I won’t spoil too much here, but they end up face to face with one of the X-Men’s greatest adversaries, *cough* In Egypt *cough*, where they are swarmed by an army of DEATH. It’s a crazy couple pages that had me smiling from ear to ear.
When the team jumps back to the White Hot Room, theres a discussion on whether chasing Dominion information should still be their main objective. After going over current events with Askani, or Racheal Summers, it’s determined that the Moira they first encountered with mysterium is too dangerous to be traveling the timelines. Prodigy knows that she’s headed to her first life and they’ll have to make as many jumps as possible to get there first.
These Are Not The X-Men We Know
Fortunately for the Dead X-Men, on their first jump they portal out right next to Moira in her fifth life. Unfortunately for them, they wind up right in the middle of an X-Men secret base. These X-Men have been on the run for quite some time, beaten and pushed to the brink by sentinels. A team of powerhouse mutants lead by Psylocke are less than trusting in such bleak times and a battle between the two teams ensues. Just when it seems like the two teams may come to a peaceful resolution, the Moira they’ve been seeking interrupts and puts them all on notice!
These Colors Are Anything But Dead X-Men
The artwork for this series continues to impress. There are a grand total of 4 illustrators in this book and they collaborate so well that I honestly can’t differentiate between who is drawing what. Everything feels so seamless and cohesive. I believe a lot of that has to do with Frank Martin’s colors.
Frank Martin’s color work really steals the show. There’s a richness to these books that just feels familiar. How to really explain that, I’m not so sure. Everything is bright and vibrant without being harsh on the eyes. Solid, primary colors don’t feel dull or boring, but very much inviting. There’s just a fantastic balance of contrast and saturation that makes everything rise off the page.
Everything Points To 9.5/10
I can’t hide my feelings on Dead X-Men so far. It’s just phenomenal work all around. Steve Foxe is giving me a entertaining, wild ride, full of X-Men easter eggs and a strong, character driven story. I find myself extremely eager for them next issue every time I get to the last page. It’s rare that i say “Aw, man that’s it?!” at the end of comics these days. That’s very indicative of a great story in my opinion. If your familiar with current X-Men events, I think this book will hit a sweet spot for you. If you’re behind on X-Men and want to jump in now, I think this series is a good spot.
