The “Dead X-Men” completed their mission. They found an organic, original, not-a-clone version of Moira McTaggart. Now Professor X can find the Moira he needs to stop the Dominion and change the terrible fate that has befallen the mutant race. But the Dead X-Men believe they have more to offer. They want back into the time streams to look for another solution. What they’ll find, is war.

Dead X-Men Initial Thoughts

I love this book so far. Plain and simple. As a matter of fact, Dead X-Men might be my favorite X-Book out right now. I believe we’ve got an extraordinary X-Team in Cannonball, Frenzy, Jubilee, Dazzler, and Prodigy. Not big names. Not the most popular characters. But you do know them. They are seasoned vets and…they’re actually a lot fun in this run.

What Makes The Dead X-Men Thrive

Steve Foxe has this great dynamic working between this unit. He’s found a great bit of symmetry with this team. They’re dialogue is light, fun and entertaining right up to the point where things get serious and then the each showcase a special depth to their character and offer a certain experience to the situation. They are unique in their own way and yet blend so well together.

I think what really draws me to this book is the story. This is one of the only X-Books that doesn’t have me constantly questioning what’s happening. It’s a fun ride that gets to play with all of these wild time streams and What-If scenarios without needing a ton of backstory. On top of that, Foxe has built this ultimate warrior Moira that is fun and dangerous. I believe she will end up being a real problem for more than just the Dead X-Men going forward.

The Classic Art of Dead X-Men

The art on this run is a fantastic companion to the writing. It’s got an old school feel to it that really gets me into the mood to keep reading. I love the classic matching suits that the team wears and the classic colors really pop and remind me of the old New Mutants days but with a fresh new modern feel.

Speaking of art, I’ll avoid spoilers, but the opening pages of this book are awesome. Speaking of old school, we get a great throwback to some classic X-Villains that just get DESTROYED by this super powered Moira with a weapon as bad-ass as anything else you’ll see in the pages of Marvel comics.

The colors are gorgeous, the action scenes are dynamic, and the characters look unique and proportionate. Everyone’s faces are expressive. The panels and dialogue bubbles flow seamlessly. I really can’t say enough good things about the art team on this book!

Everything Points To 9/10

I’ve gushed about as much as I can about this issue, and this series so far. It’s a fun ride. With everything going on the X-Men universe right now it can be easy to get confused or bogged down by it all, but believe me when I tell you, this series has my focus and has me excited for what’s to come. It’s a well balanced collaborative effort between writing and art and I can tell that there’s a lot of history and love when it comes to the creators of this book.
