This review was made possible by screeners for The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy. The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy premiers on Prime Video on Friday, February 23, 2024.
The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy focuses on two alien doctors who specialize in rare sci-fi illnesses. Dr. Sleech (Stephanie Hsu) and Dr. Klak (Keke Palmer) have to deal with love, death, and anxiety in this adult animated comedy.
ADULT ANIMATION MEETS MEDICAL PROCEDURAL
For years the television and streaming landscape has been flooded with medical dramas full of attractive young doctors and nurses, dealing with an abundance of melodramatic relationship issues and intense scenes of life and death situations. Likewise, adult animated projects have been popularized for their blend of over the top animation and ability to push the envelope of what could be shown on network TV. With this new series from Prime Video, the viewer is treated to a wonderful melding of the two genres that is, at the same time, laugh out loud funny and filled with true human moments and connection.
STELLAR WRITING AND VOICE TALENT
At multiple points during my viewing of this series, I found myself truly caring about the characters and what they were going through. Even though they are animated, not human, and completely fictional, I was surprised at the very human story that the creative team was telling. As someone who is not a fan of medical procedurals, I was very pleased to find myself engaged in the wonderful parody of those types of shows.
This all comes down to the incredibly talented people that put this show together. Creator Cirocco Dunlap and the team of writers and producers did a phenomenal job at piecing together a story full of laughs and intrigue. They were, of course, aided by a fantastic voice cast including Kieran Culkin, Stephanie Hsu, Natasha Lyonne, Keke Palmer, and Maya Rudolph.
A MEDICAL MIRACLE
As I said before, I am not a fan of most of the medical shows that have been available over the past 30 years. However, with a wonderful blend of humor, poignant moments, and a voice cast full of incredible artists this series hooked me instantly. Whether you like either animated or medical shows, this is one you won’t want to miss.
