The Story:
Captain America and his underground team of Defenders have a plan to show the American people the truth about what their country has become. Meanwhile, the true powers behind the American government continue to try to stamp out these Defenders before any damage can be done.
The Writing:
Chip Zdarsky continues to weave a web of storytelling unlike any writer working in the comic book industry today. The plot and character work is stunning and, just like in the first issue, the big reveals were breathtaking and serve to really get the reader hyped for the next issue. Masterful work as always!
The Artwork:
What is there to say about Daniel Acuna’s work that hasn’t already been said? The stylized tone brings in a feeling of gritty desperation and every panel looks like a piece of museum artwork. I keep coming back to the character designs, Steve Rogers and Luke Cage are wonderful examples of two aging superheroes and what time can do to the body. And, of course, I can’t write a review of this book without mentioning the incredible Alex Ross cover, beautiful as always!
The Verdict: 9.5/10
Great writing, solid action, and fantastic artwork make this another near perfect comic book issue. The only downside is that it suffers from being a middle chapter in a story and is burdened with a fair amount of set up for what is to come ahead. I have no doubt, however, that what is to come ahead will be nothing short of magical.
