It’s never too old to make a comeback.

Ruben Kwan is learning this the hardway via the pages of Image Comics’ latest hit series.

The story of the 50 year old firefighter who discovers fate has chosen him for doing greater things has challenged the notion of traditional super hero stories. Discovering he is immune to fire, Ruben has decided to try becoming a super-hero.

The story has been winning over readers with its’ unique take and reluctant lead driving his own path. It’s been a staple for the Nerd Initiative Comics Team since its’ debut.

That’s why for this review, it’s a N.I. Bullpen group discussion with Marty Stoked, and yours truly (Ken – ODPH podcast/NI Comics EIC) breaking down this chapter (Possible Spoiler Warning):

Writing:

Marty: Midlife #3 presents a compelling narrative enriched with a small yet impactful glimpse into Ruben Kwan’s backstory. The banter between the Maroon Suits brings a playful humor, and their relentless pursuit of Kwan adds an exciting layer of mystery and anticipation.

Breaking away from superhero norms, Kwan’s decision to reveal his secret to friends and family creates a refreshing support dynamic, making his journey relatable and compelling. The interactions with the enigmatic grandmother add an intriguing layer of suspense, leaving us eager to unravel the secrets she may be hiding. The delicate balance of action and character development keeps the story engaging, making it a page-turner.

Ken: Buccellato comes at this story from a few angles. The throwbacks to Ruben’s childhood is a solid introduction to the dangers involved with fighting fires. Seeing how the Maroon Suits contrast that notion in their eyes made was a fun plot point. As they made their presence known, The Suits provided some great comic relief to the drama. However, there actions were no joke in bringing an immediate threat into Ruben’s life.

The family dynamic continues to be this series’ strongest elements. From the early childhood moments to the present day juggling act, the writing shows how not everything is easy but how much it’s overcome because Ruben cares. The explanation to his wife about his powers and her reaction to it is a prime example of this. The closing moments tie everything together while leaving readers with a great cliffhanger to think about. Another fantastic job with the writing.

Art/Colors/Letters:

Marty: The artistic elements in Midlife #3 shine brightly, particularly during dynamic action sequences. The use of distinct colors for Kwan’s speech bubbles while in costume enhances readability, and the onomatopoeia creatively intensifies the impact of action moments. The paneling technique with large letters, incorporating gunshots, demonstrates a visually striking approach. The alternating red and blue colors for siren sounds cleverly immerse readers in the urgency of the situation. The concluding splash page showcases exceptional artistry, vividly capturing Kwan’s capabilities in a unique and impactful way.

Ken: Simeone and Otsmane-Elhaou hit the ground running with the emotions within these pages. The throwback memory pours out with danger and panic to the events unfolding. Fast forwarding to present day, those panels run back through Ruben talking with his wife about his new stat quo. The art captures the personal talk while giving readers a new perspective of where things go from here.

The art gives the Maroon Suits a proper introduction with a great two-page full image. Their plan against Ruben combines the high stakes of the surroundings with the lack of properly understanding their actions. This all caps off with an excellent full page image of immediate danger. The imagery doesn’t hide the fact Ruben is brand new to this heroic world and reacting to its’ highs and lows is a visual treat.

Final Thoughts:

Marty: Midlife #3 is a testament to the creative team’s ability to weave a compelling narrative while delivering visually stunning artwork. The infusion of humor, the breaking of superhero norms, and the introduction of intriguing characters contribute to the overall richness of the story. The meticulous attention to details, from speech bubble colors to onomatopoeia, elevates the reading experience. The ending splash page serves as a powerful visual climax, leaving readers eagerly anticipating the next chapter of Ruben Kwan’s journey.
