Old School Made New

The saga kicks off an intimidating figure known as Draxus sitting at the helm of a spaceship. Draxus is leading a space fleet of immense size in search of the “Sharsrum” weapon. Nothing more is known about this object’s capabilities, but looking at the size of the army trying to obtain it, the Sharsrum could be a game-changer for control of the universe.

Meanwhile on earth, a young man by the name of Grant Garrison is preparing to brave the dangers of High School. His past seems to be in question as he was found with amnesia on a highway. Principal Murray welcomes him and gives him an alibi to fit in undetected. From here, Grant is paired with Eli Sanchez. The pair makes fast friends as they head to class. In this classroom, Grant meets Jen, Eli’s step-sister. As the trio heads to lunch after class, no one is prepared for what happens next.

A Meteor?

Grant witnesses a meteor heading right towards the school! There is no time to react. Everyone is caught in the impact!

Waking up from the crash, Jen sees Grant to find a whole new world in front of them. Everyone is gone. The only thing left is a creature in front of them looking primed to attack. As they process what is going on, an object attaches itself to Grant. The object shoots energy through Grant, transforming him into something else. Grant mentions his mind is “Awakening”!

What has happened to Grant? Is this the key to his amnesia? What of his classmates? Readers witness first hand the birth of a hero as Grant steps up to face the creature. However, not everything is as it seems. The mystery is just beginning but readers will want to buckle in as the story of Grant Garrison starts its journey.

Incal Universe Is Growing!

Story Review

Craig drops an impressive debut issue pulling heavily at the influences of Jack Kirby. Grant’s mysterious background is a big part of this opening issue, but where it shines is post meteor. Once the connection is made with the “Starstorm”, Grant seems to have everything come back to him just enough to address the situation at hand. Craig still keeps some secrets kept close as the suit’s true potential hasn’t fully been unveiled. The story moves pretty swiftly leaving readers with enough to form ideas of where things are leading.

Artwork Overview

Doing double duty, Craig (w/ Finestone on the colors) dives into the classic sci-fi elements. The two-page full panel spread lets readers know how important the Starstorm is without even digging into its’ background. The reactions in high school play out as one would expect with a great panel pre-meteor impact. However, the image readers will most remember from this issue is the “Awakening” 2-page spread. Absolutely love the coloring and multiple character faces of what’s to come with Grant’s story.

It is such a throwback to Kirby Sci-fi (and that is NEVER a bad thing) that it gives the following action such a vintage superhero feel. The final panel adds more questions to what is really going on but closes things out enough for readers to jump back in the next issue.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

Craig and Finestone introduce readers to a new hero with a modern throwback style all his own. Blending in classic sci-fi storytelling with excellent art, THE SAVAGE STRENGTH OF STARSTORM #1 is sure to please fans looking for a new superhero universe to add to their collection.

LOCAL MAN #4 – Ghosts From The Past Bring Controversy

Local Man #4 – Image Comics

© 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

Creative Team: Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio

Welcome to an all-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re continuing to follow the story of JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK and the latest escapades of a hero fallen from grace in the pages of Image Comics’ latest hit series. If anyone has ever wondered about recapturing the feel and energy from an early 90’s Image series, this book has done it and given it a modern feel.

LOCAL MAN #4 by Tony Fleecs, Tim Seeley, Brad Simpson and Felipe Sobrerio dives further into the mystery surrounding Xaver’s return home and a mounting body count following him. Let’s take a closer look at the latest chapter, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Who Is Crossjack?

© 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

JACK XAVER aka CROSSJACK’s tenure as a superhero has been put on indefinite hold after publicly being removed from the team Third-Gen. Returning home to Farmington, Wisconsin after the public disgrace, Jack tries assuming a “normal” life. However, his super hero past won’t let him go as he’s now connected to the deaths of former enemies The Hodag and Frightside. With a killer on the loose and setting Jack up for the fall, Jack breaks the rules of his Third-Gen termination & attempts to resume his heroics.

Issue #4

This issue picks up with Jack (and his dog) investigating a restricted water quarry where Hodag tipped off Frightside about before both were killed. He’s interrupted by Chief Bucholz who breaks the news about Frightside. Jack was last seen around both before their respective deaths. Not ready to be brought in, Jack jumps the fence and hits the water. During the swim, he finds an underground tunnel into a secret lair.

Once inside the lair, Jack begins to uncover some secrets he is not ready to deal with. He’s also paid a visit by an old teammate: Camo Crusader, who isn’t ready to forgive and forget what Jack “has done”.

Readers find out more clues to why everyone hates Jack along with more clues to the bigger mystery at hand. However, nobody is ready for the later half of this issue with big surprises that change the course on everything! If readers think that’s a big deal, just wait for the final panels as there’s one last reveal to be told that gives some clarity on what to expect next.

The flashback flip-portion of this story will also give some deeper clarity on the love triangle between Crossjack/Neon/Camo Crusader that plays into present time. Expect more shocking moments with that concluding last image.

Story Review

Fleecs & Seeley start putting the puzzle pieces together behind the mystery unfolding. Seeing Jack being the only voice of reason has been a particular take that pays off each time. The meeting between him and Chief Bucholz worked to demonstrate this. Bucholz would like nothing more than to pin this on Jack due to his wife’s past with Jack. This blinds him from seeing what’s going on until he discovers evidence that backs up Jack’s actions.

The moment fans will be talking about is the confrontation between Jack and Camo. The tension has been building for 4 issues now and readers get a solid payoff (even given more weight based off the flashback story). The pacing of the story keeps things moving along right to the huge reveal in the final moments. Jack’s road to redemption takes one step forward and two steps back making it compelling reading each time out.

© 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

Artwork Overview

The art reflects this heavily. Even when Jack appears to catch a break, his reactions never show too much joy. The events preceding have left him broken but he moves forward. The confrontation with Camo plays out well within the panels. The lead-in doesn’t falter when they meet. Seeing Jack outmatched and somehow maintaining made for great storytelling.

Without revealing too much, the fallout of the Jack/Camo moments will be one readers will be chatting the most about. Those panels hold nothing back as the emotional build-up comes through with the action and resolution. The final panel leaves a few more questions to ponder.

The flip on the art style plays right into the nostalgia of those early Image Comics. When readers see that, it literally is a trip back to that era and gives the current moments more weight for a bigger payoff.

FINAL POINT: 8.5 OUT OF 10

Being so close to solving the mystery has never felt further away. The build-up leading into the latest issue doesn’t miss Local Man #4 hits readers with long awaited moments and answers. Fleecs, Seeley and the team set up Jack Xaver with superb writing and art to challenge him with his most personal confrontation yet. Don’t miss grabbing this issue on New Comic Book Day!

Welcome to a brand-new edition of Parlay Points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast via Nerd Initiative!

A New Year And A New City

© 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

Last issue, the journey started in New Orleans in 1918, showcasing a young musician’s rise in finding his voice in the city’s music scene. This issue kicks off in a dark theater in 1928. A man is on stage, talking to the audience about how his instrument and the music it plays gives him life. As he continues to speak, the lights come on to start a musical number. However, this moment proves to be a rehearsal and the direction it goes in is one not hitting the high notes.

Immediately, the production is stopped by its director Gail Gelstein, who emerges from the empty seats with changes in mind. However, the pressure is building for a hit show because Gail’s show “Kansas, Oh Kansas”, is featured on Broadway.

The theater manager Herman challenges her to double down on the strengths of the show: the music. If there’s anything to save a bad show, it’s a great song. He gives her an ultimatum: Deliver a hit jazz song in 48 hours. The story centers around someone becoming a jazz man, so Gail is questioned why there’s no jazz music.

© 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

No Jazz?

Gail reveals she doesn’t know Jazz, but Herman tells her to make it happen, no excuses. With time not on her side, Gail heads home to Chicago for a wedding. When she’s talking with her parents about the song she’s working on, Gail reveals it has no title. Her dad gives her a tip for help in the form of Ray Stroh. Stroh works for Wolverine Publishing and might be Gail’s only hope for making a hit.

Can Gail and Ray pull this off? Will the show be saved? Readers see Gail’s quest into making a great song isn’t such an easy path. There are many stumbling blocks to overcome but Gail’s not letting go of finding the hit she desperately needs. The story shifts into some different directions leading to a surprising final act. Gail’s search for the music might not be the only thing she (along with the readers) discovers along the way before closing off this chapter.

Higgins and Clark continue to display the power of jazz with another strong issue. Gail’s story is one of determination mixed with self-discovery along the way. Knowing she needs to incorporate jazz into her production while not knowing anything about it made for a unique dilemma.

The dynamic between her and Ray works well as his excitement to help is balanced out with her drive to secure the song. Another great sequence is the banter with her brother Toby. His unlikely advice plays a big part in sending the story into a new direction. The revelation of why Gail wants to make this song work so badly is a great twist that readers can easily comprehend. It all ties back to the power of music and the connections it makes. This all leads into the final act which comes off as a bit of a surprise, but plays out showcasing the impact the music has truly made in one person’s life.

© 2023 Image Comics, Inc. All rights reserved.

Artwork Overview

MASELLIS makes a huge splash with the art in this issue. The style feels vintage with elements of abstract mixed in. The time period is fully captured within the panels. There are many incredible full-page panels sprinkled throughout this issue. The one kicking off the musical start sets a huge tempo for the rest of the issue.

Gail’s train ride from New York to Chicago is another noteworthy visual montage capped off with her staring out the window while the conductor announces the arrival. Gail’s attention is lost in the song she’s building and the color scheme used to transition (excellent work by Monti) shows how lost in thought she had been in.

This comes back full circle on the train ride back, led in by the panel with Gail standing in front of her suitcases. Masellis delivers on projecting the energy of live music with Gail’s time in a few night spots. The crowd reactions let loose on how the music affects them. The emotional reaction isn’t left there as sharp readers will see through the issue: the only times Gail smiles in this issue is when she’s listening to music. It’s a testament to how impactful music can link with someone’s soul.

Final Point: 8.5 OUT OF 10

The music doesn’t skip a beat with Deep Cuts #2. Higgins, Clark, Masellis and the team guide readers through Gail Gelstein’s stop in Chicago with superb writing and exceptional art. There is literally nothing like this book on the shelves of the local comic shops. The series continues to be a must read for all fans & can’t be missed on New Comic Book Day.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Mutant Mayhem Trailer! My Reaction

Paramount Pictures dropped a new trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles today and I have thoughts…

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem only in theaters August 2nd!

OK, so first of all…WOW! That looks fantastic! There was so much more info about the plot and characters than what we got in the initial teaser trailer. We also get a look at all of the other mutants that will cause said “Mayhem”. But where did they come from? What made them mutants? We also got an awesome introduction to a new mutant to the franchise “Super Fly” voiced by Ice Cube. It looks to me like he is going to be a great antagonist to the Turtles.

In the trailer alone there some amazing examples of the voice cast bringing these characters to life in a way that will only elevate the movie. Ayo Edebiri (The Bear, Big Mouth) already seems like a fantastic choice for April O’Neil. The brief moments of here discussing things with the turtles seems like there is some great chemistry there. We’ve previously heard the turtles but in this trailer we get a much wider range of their emotions.

I love that we get a deeper look at the Turtles as they struggle with being teenagers in a world that would ultimately reject them for what they are. We seem them wanting to be a part of the world they live under. We get a glimpse into their desires like going to school and having a girlfriend. We also see the family dynamic with more from Jackie Chan’s interpretation of Splinter. I absolutely loved the joke about not using the word “rat” in the context of being a snitch!

My favorite moment in the trailer is Master Splinter describing the Turtles by their virtues. Each of them having a strength that makes them unique and important to the family. It seems like the film will truly embody the heart and soul of TMNT: Brotherhood, family, and being stronger together via our individual strengths.

Seth Rogen brings fun, deep, and engaging writing to the Turtles. He just gets it. With the unique animation and character designs, it seems like the production team really understood the assignment and truly put their unique signature on it.

The story begins with the mysterious figure known as No-Name flying toward the Omphal, the humongous asteroid located in the center of the universe with more secrets inside. There is a group of individuals inside the rock known as the Eight Intra-Sleepers waiting for his arrival. No-Name has an artifact in his possession that they have a vested interest with.

The life story of the Metabaron is set to be revealed.

© 2023 Humanoids

No-Name?

The past begins with a young No-Name and his father-mother on a mission to slay a beast known as a Leodactyl. The pair embark on their dangerous task with precision strikes. Readers witness first hand how dangerous and violent the pair can be to accomplish their goals. However, that was only the tip of the iceberg.

Once they return from their mission, No-Name is given his final test to prove his status as the heir apparent. He is challenged by his father-mother to a duel to the death! “Victory or Death” are the only options. Readers witness the brutality and the emergence of No-Name’s ascension to becoming a Metabaron.

The Journey Continues

The journey doesn’t stop here as No-Name begins his quest to acquire the most powerful weapons in the universe. Can he step up to the mantle left for him? With what has previously transpired, does he have enough strength and determination to finish the mission?

Readers are taken on a wild ride as No-Name attempts to conquer such weapons as the Transpineal Eye and the Sword of Dreams known as Praxis to name a few. The action raises the stakes at each turn all leading to an ultimate confrontation. The conclusion will leave no doubt in anyone’s mind on why the legend of the Metabaron is known and feared throughout the Incal Universe.

© 2023 Humanoids

Another Indie Comic You Should Check Out!

Story Review

The story of the Metabaron is a very unique one. The mentality of No-Name is one of “mission over everything”. From starting out as an ambitious fighter to evolving into a cold and ruthless warrior, Jodorowsky takes readers into a fascinating journey into pushing limits over self-sacrifices.

The duel with father-mother establishes that point directly. Knowing that there is only one way to grasp the mantle, both know what to expect from their face-off. It sends No-Name into an emotionless void which becomes a frightening strength.

Readers see this play out in the final act as No-Name fully becomes the Metabaron he envisions. Most of the other elements of this story play into the Incal formula of sci-fi, intense action and particular creativity. Readers are left with a definitive mark of why this character is a legend.

Artwork Overview

© 2023 Humanoids

The art is where this issue shines above anything else. If you have never seen a Travis Charest book before, you are in for a treat. His style is so realistic and detailed, it raises any story to a new level. The visuals of the fight between No-Name Father-Mother and the Leodactyl establish a strong pace for where the story is heading.

The fight between Father-Mother and No-Name will be another moment readers will be raving about as the sequences play out like a movie. The same goes for the initial quest for Praxis. “Stunning” feels like an undersell when it comes to his work. The only drawback is Charest only worked on pages 11-39, with this oversized edition featuring Charest’s sketchbook which is worth buying this issue alone!

It is explained in the book on the reasons for the art change which Janjetov fills in the rest of the book very well. Janjetov’s style plays into the final product of these trials for weaponry. The closing portion of the book leaves no doubt on where the evolution of No-Name has formed into.

FINAL POINT: 8 OUT OF 10

The origin of one of the most feared characters in the Incal Universe is brought to life through the visionary art of Travis Charest in a special edition not to be missed. Solid writing matches the incredible artwork to deliver fans a story that won’t soon be forgotten. Keep an eye out for this on New Comic Book Day.

Pop Culture: The Modern Mythology Shaping Our Society

Throughout history, mythology has served a crucial role in human societies, attempting to explain the mysteries of the world and providing a framework for understanding our existence. These ancient tales contextualized the origins of our world and sought to uncover the meaning behind our presence.

But as time progresses and society evolves, a new force has emerged that fulfills a similar purpose: pop culture.

Pop Culture Shaping the Fabric of Communities

In many ways, the way we perceive the role of myths in the past today is how we will perceive pop culture in the future. Pop culture, with its immense reach and influence, is playing a transformative role in our society, shaping behavior, beliefs, and the very fabric of our communities.

This article explores how the latter is assuming the role for our society that myths once played for our ancestors. By examining the impact of pop culture on our behavior and values, we gain valuable insights into the current state of our society and its direction.

In his book “The Cry for Myth,” psychologist Rollo May argued that the absence of the great ancient myths in our modern day society has contributed to the prevalence of violence, highlighting the importance of myths in guiding and inspiring individuals.

While May’s argument can and should be debated and challenged, it is evident that myths serve the role of guides for being responsible members of society. However, the perception that myths only belong to ancient, mystical cultures undermines the relevance of modern myths present in today’s pop culture.

Let’s explore the notion that our contemporary pop culture landscape is our new mythology, and that it shapes our understanding of global citizenship. In the ancient world one would have a shaman or wise-person to interpret the myths for the people.  Today, in an era where wisdom has become democratized, the ability to interpret our myths is no longer the purview of an elite few.  Any consumer of media has the ability to be an intelligent discerner of our mythical pop culture landscape.

Finding Our Myths in Pop Culture:

In today’s media-rich environment, the abundance of TV shows, movies, and video games allows everyone to discover their own personal myth. Some of these myths present characters and situations worthy of emulation, while others serve as negative object lessons, showing us what not to be.

However, it is essential to acknowledge that myths, whether ancient or modern, require interpretation and critical analysis. Not all myths are created equal, and they do not always offer a healthy understanding of the world at face value.

Developing the Tools of Interpretation:

There is a teaching about four types of learners: the sponge, the funnel, the strainer, and the sieve. The sponge soaks up everything; the funnel takes in at one end and lets out at the other; the strainer lets out the wine and retains the lees; the sieve lets out the coarse meal and retains the choice flour.

This teaching is useful in our approach to media. The issue is not the media itself, be it “The Bachelor”, “Downton Abbey”, the MCU or “Star Wars”, but rather our lack of tools to consume it effectively.

Instead of focusing solely on the media itself, our ability to consume it effectively lies in our interpretation skills.

We must develop the tools to filter the messages conveyed by the myths we encounter. This calls for discernment and a conscious effort to determine the positive and negative object lessons within the narratives we consume.

Being Intentional Consumers:

Intentionality is key when engaging with media. While it is perfectly understandable and acceptable to mindlessly consume content at times, we should also take the opportunity to evaluate what we watch and why.

Reflecting on the messages being conveyed, identifying the underlying themes, and assessing their alignment with our values are crucial steps. By actively participating in the mythology of our time, we can shape our collective understanding of what it means to be citizens of the world.

Expanding Our Worldview:

To fully benefit from our modern pop culture mythology, we must allow the media we consume to challenge and broaden our worldview. We should actively seek out stories that offer diverse perspectives, allowing us to encounter and appreciate different beliefs and experiences. Engaging in conversations with others about the media we consume facilitates learning and the exchange of ideas, enriching our understanding of the myths that shape our society.

Conclusion:

Pop culture has become the new mythology of our time, providing us with contemporary narratives that resonate with our day and age. While traditional myths still hold value, they may not directly address the challenges and aspirations of our modern world like Star Wars or superhero stories do.

However, it is crucial that we rediscover and hone our ability to interpret these modern myths effectively. By being intentional consumers, developing critical analysis skills, and engaging in meaningful conversations, we actively shape our reality through the myths we tell and consume, fostering a more enlightened and conscious society.

Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ Conquers Both Sea and Land!

0

A teenage girl who wants nothing more than to explore a world she’s been curious about her whole life. A kingly father who is overprotective and forbids his daughter from fraternizing with those different from them. A witch who gives the girl an opportunity to live the life she’s always dreamt of…but at a cost. If you just started belting out songs from the 1989 animated film, The Little Mermaid, you know your Disney Renaissance films!

Now, it’s no surprise that several of Disney’s live action films over the last 15 years have been met with mixed criticism, often landing as more of a miss than a hit. Some films such as 2019’s The Lion King and 2022’s Pinocchio captured the essence of the original films visually. But they either failed to bring the same energy as the originals, to add depth and emotion to characters, or to indulge in creativity. Meanwhile, 2010’s Alice in Wonderland and 2020’s Mulan shifted the original stories around so much and made several drastic changes to their characters to the point where, frankly, most people probably forgot these movies even existed.

With director Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid being the latest addition to Disney’s collection of live action remakes, the question remains: Does it manage to beat all the odds and rise above the long list of lackluster adaptations?

The answer: Yes. Yes, it does.

Read Also: ‘Peter Pan & Wendy’ – Growing Up Without The Magic of Neverland

The film rips out the world in which the original animation takes place, transforming it in a near-realistic setting. And for once, it isn’t jarring, difficult to see, or even gray and boring. Instead, there is a visual emphasis on the ocean’s beauty alongside an appreciation of culture on land. After all, Ariel is a character of duality whose identity is tied to her mermaid life but is also longing for a life of adventure on land. And while we see the vivid and lively nature of life under the sea, there is also a depiction of misery and frustration through Ariel’s perspective which is contrasted by the wonder and amazement that is expressed through her time on land.

Much of the alternating tones in visuals is aided through Halle Bailey’s magical performance as Ariel. Her voice captures every ounce of emotion that Ariel carries with her, but as Ursula says, it’s also her body language that pulls through to highlight her curiosity and love of all things above sea, including Prince Eric. Bailey takes apart who Ariel is and puts her back together in a way that makes the audience go silent, especially as she reaches that high note in “Part of Your World.”

The only lackluster performance comes from Javier Bardem as King Triton as he just misses the mark as the strict, overbearing father with a massive temperament. Melissa McCarthy is both comedic, enticing, and menacing as Ursula, exceeding all the expectations I had for her. Jonah Hauer-King is pure perfection as Prince Eric and has a chemistry that matches Bailey’s energy. Rather than leaving Eric’s character as one that feeds into the idea of “love at first sight”, Hauer-King manages to give a genuine performance that makes his feelings for Ariel all the more convincing.

And it’s true that hyper realistic, CGI animals are difficult to animate with emotion. But when you have actors that can handle that part with just their voice, anything is possible. Daveed Diggs as Sebastian resulted in a surprising amount of laughter, Jacob Tremblay is as peppy and adorable as his animated counterpart, and Awkwafina is a solid choice for Scuttle that requires more context than many realize.

Creatively, The Little Mermaid adds on an extra 45 minutes of story from the original animation, and it works to its advantage. The added depth to the stories of both Ariel and Eric allow for the film to expand upon what the original film provided and enhance both characters. The newly added songs also work well in theme with the story and emotions shared between Ariel and Eric. While a unique flair or an added character trait can be detrimental for some films, that is certainly not the case with The Little Mermaid. Instead, they have added value to the film itself, something that hasn’t been done successfully since Disney’s Cinderella which was released eight years ago in 2015.

“But a mermaid has no tears, and therefore she suffers so much more.” The Little Mermaid takes this quote from Hans Christian Andersen and runs with it. Ariel isn’t just some teenage mermaid who likes a boy. She has and always will be a girl filled with curiosity and the desire to learn about a culture so much unlike her own. It is with Halle Bailey’s enthusiasm that The Little Mermaid swims past naysayers, and brings to life one of the most beloved red-headed mermaids, conquering both sea and land.

Samosa Rating:

The Little Mermaid receives 4.5 out of 5 Samosas.

The Little Mermaid is now playing in theaters.

‘Fast X’ Races to the Finish Line, With Room For Improvement

0

After 22 years, the Fast and Furious saga is one that sparks conversation and debate amongst fans and non-fans alike. And despite all the odds and all the criticism, the family returns in their latest film, Fast X. The film brings in a new threat, Dante Reyes, whose family fortune was obliterated during the final events of Fast Five which was released back in 2011. With his family’s safety hanging in the balance, Dominic Toretto must travel the world once again to fight Dante and bring him down. But at what cost?

Having seen each and every Fast and Furious film in the franchise, there is definitely a formula that is utilized throughout each story that has grown stale. The Toretto family has a mission, some of them might find themselves in danger, insane car-related feats are accomplished, characters are killed off, and the list goes on. If you’re wondering if this still applies to Fast X, you’re absolutely right. And yet, to some degree, it still feels a bit more refreshing than the last few films we’ve gotten from the franchise.

From the get-go, Fast X pulls its inspiration for storytelling from other franchises. Even its finale resembles the same energy and tone as Marvel’s Infinity War from one of the most popular franchises of the modern era. It is a roundup of friends and enemies from the past, uniting together against perhaps the smartest and most unpredictable villain the Fast and Furious family has ever seen.

As the story progresses, we’re given false hope into believing everything will be okay before throwing a new obstacle in front of these characters. By the end, audiences are left with next to no hope for our favorite characters, despite having suspended our belief throughout the years. We don’t know who is alive, who will make it, who will come back for the next two parts, or how the series will resolve to take down Jason Momoa. It’s this mysterious intrigue that really keeps the audience interested and on their edge of their seat, waiting for the next installment.

Unhinged is not a new term to describe Fast X but it is fairly accurate, and it’s exactly that but more so than usual. Jason Momoa as Dante takes the center stage, and steals the show with his wacky and out of the box performance that reminds us a bit of Batman’s Joker. It’s the casual insult to toxic masculinity that gets the crowd roaring and makes Dante’s character even more engaging and entertaining to watch. Are we rooting for the villain? No. But do we appreciate his dedication to the bit? Absolutely.

As far as other individual characters go, one could guess that there’s little to no change in the development of Dom and Letty whose dynamic and attitude remain the same. What I cannot get enough of is John Cena’s Jakob taking the role of “FUNcle” through his interactions with young Brian, Dom’s son. The fun banter amongst characters like Han, Roman, Tej, and Ramsey is always welcome and encouraged. But it was an unexpected and refreshing change of pace to see growth in these characters, particularly between Roman taking accountability for his mistakes and Tej providing brotherly reassurance. And to be brutally honest, there was just not nearly enough of Brie Larson’s Tess, but here’s to hoping for more of her going forward.

If there’s anything that this series needed on top of its action-packed and fast-paced scenes, it would be a combination of the adrenaline-soaked energy that Fast and Furious once had alongside generous amounts of character development. Fast X gives us throwbacks to other films, provides us humorous banter, and puts various locations on display that have potential for scenic sights. But at times, the film speeds through to the finish line with a copy-and-paste version of our main characters that seem unchanged by the long years of missions and near-fatal car flips. At this point, we can constantly ask if we can expect anything to change in the next two films. But all we can do is just wait and see.
