Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog for the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we have arrived at the conclusion of an explosive crossover from DC Comics. Anything Gothan City is the battlefield, readers know Batman will fight anyone to the end to defend it and his vision of justice. However for this fight, it’s his “Bat Family” providing the opposition. Lading the charge is his lover/enemy Selina Kyle aka Catwoman.

The battle has morphed out of a simple question of ethics into a no-holds-barred fight leaving nothing but shattered ties and a city prime to be conquered in its wake.

Due to the fallout from “Knight Terrors”, Bruce Wayne aka Batman was asleep for quite some time. When he finally wakes up, Gotham City’s crime rate has drastically been reduced. A new initiative has been started amongst the criminals of Gotham. The mastermind behind it? None other than Selina Kyle aka Catwoman!

Selina has been teaching the lower level of criminals a “Robin Hood” style of activity. The movement has lowered crimes in Gotham to astronomical records. This doesn’t sit well with Batman, as he sees all crime as universally bad.

It also doesn’t help that Zur-En-Arrh, his emergency back-up personality is active due to the Knight Terrors ramifications. The cold-hearted mindset decrees that Selina’s operation must be stopped after a life is lost during a heist.

Sides have been taken amongst the Bat family. Drastic actions have been taken by Batman with no remorse. Of all the victims, no one was hurt more deeper than Jason Todd aka The Red Hood with the actions of the possessed Dark Knight.

All the while during the Bat family civil war, Vandal Savage, the immortal nemesis of the DCU, has swooped in making a play to conquer Gotham. Now with the battle at the breaking point, who walks away the winner of Gotham City?

This issue begins with Scandal Savage, daughter of Vandal and formerly aligned with Catwoman, organizing Selina’s former pupils. They have been given their orders to get the meteor fragments which will give Vandal strength of unknown levels. Meanwhile, Tim Drake (Robin) is heading to investigate an explosion. When he arrives, he and readers aren’t ready for what’s next.

Led by Two-Face, a group of Batman’s rogues make their way down the street, nearly killing a few civilians. Overwhelmed, Tim is taken hostage.

All the while, Batman, Catwoman and Jason are meeting where it appears the real Bruce has come back to the fold. Readers witness a tremendous speech and plea to the family to come together to stop Vandal’s attack. The question now is: Can the broken family refrom and save Gotham?

The answer is aimed to please, but with overwhelming odds, t might not be enough. The ending gives this story fitting epic moments with one especially outshining them all. Its’ fall-out looks to set up a new stat quo but one can’t help but wonder if the bonds have been broken beyond repair?

The writing team bring a great deal of noteworthy events to the finale. Seeing the “old” Batman re-emerge to inspire the family was a solid way to shift gears towards the common enemy of the Savages.

At the end of it all, Justice is what both warring sides of the Bat-family want, with Selina being the voice of reason. There are excellent moments with the various family members teaming up but none bigger than “The Cat and The Bat”.

Throughout their history, there’s few like the pairing of Bruce and Selina. Seeing them pair up in the later issues gives readers a reminder of why this conflict has been so personal.

The writers carry this mood into the final battle. There’s a fair mix of action and drama that is sure to please.

The epilogue is one that might throw some off. It feels like a reset until something re-surfaces which leaves some questions heading into the future of Bruce Wayne. Overall, it has the “big fight feel” that you ant to see in a finale. How long it lasts will be the thought moving forward.

The art captures the intensity of the ending at hand. the introduction of two-Face and the rogues makes a big splash at how far Gotham has crumbled due to the war. It’s followed up by some great action panels with more of the family involved. The meeting between Bruce, Selina and Jason carries a bug emotional burden of Bruce’s actions.

This reflects later in the issue when Bruce and Selina pair up. There is subtle facial expressions indicating the extreme highs and lows reflecting the conflict and its surrounding factors. Readers will have a lasting impression of what transpired and an idea of where things lead now.

FINAL GRADE: 8 OUT OF 10

When the smoke clears, the fate of Gotham City is made evident to readers with a fitting conclusion to the Bat family civil war. With themes reminding readers about the bond of family through the writing and art, This crossover conclusion is sure to have fans talking on New Comic Book Day.

For this entry, we are returning to a supernatural tale from Comixology Originals that simply can’t be missed. Since its’ debut, the story of Ian, Cynthia, Joy and Alex, a group running an all-night diner which has more to it than a daily special, has been a major hit with comic readers. The final image of where tings were left immediately created a buzz for when the series would be back.

At the Comixology Originals panel at New York Comic Con 2023, the final arc was announced. Since then, fans have been catching up in digital (and print via Dark Horse Comics) form. It is an amazing read filled with imaginative takes, pushing the creative limits. Heading into the close, the creative team is not ending their shift on a sour note.

After surviving their encounter with Lazaruk and the “Justice Angels”, The remaining members of the vampire group look to figure their future out. With Alex lost during an encounter with the Takers (the governing body of the supernatural), Ian and Joy looked to take the fight directly to their doorstep to get their family member back.

As Ian put it, “After all….we’re super heroes” which Alex’s fascination with begin their wild adventures. Others haven’t played their cards just yet as the world they know has been turned upside down.

This issue picks up where Joy is continuing the vigilante ways patrolling the streets. Ian looks on from outside the closed Diner. Readers can tell he appears troubled with what’s unfolding.

Meanwhile back in the Forrest colony, Cynthia and Frank are discussing the fallout of events. They break away for a quiet moment of normalcy. It’s a change of pace that both are enjoying considering what has transpired.

The story shifts to Joy on patrol. She jumps into a fight over a woman between two men. Joy’s interference isn’t welcomed and a scuffle breaks out. Joy handles events but some of the women watching events play out are also not happy with Joy.

Readers quickly see a surprise as they are not whom they seem to be. Luckily, Andrea, the former human ally of Alex and the group appears. What transpires next catch some off guard as more clarity about what is the groups’ next step comes into focus.

That said, once the closing pages begin, everything readers thought they knew changes course as the last panel solidifies what everyone knew going in: The story here is far from over.

Zdarsky brings readers back with a well-paced return for Ian and company. Having Cynthia act as a narrator of sorts reflects the mood of everyone since the last issue concluded. The tone is one of being worn down and wondering what’s next.

The moments with Frank give this story a “normal” break before diving back into the supernatural. The ramifications of losing Alex weigh heavy on the rest of the group.

Seeing how everyone is dealing with that loss demonstrates a wide range of emotions. Seeing where Ian is leaning towards solving their problem is something readers can sense the consequences of those actions. It all ties together with the final panels, setting events in motion for a memorable farewell.

Loo and Alleyne bring the human emotions out of Cynthia and Frank right from the beginning. Their panels are a nice transition in comparison to what follows after. The fight between Joy and her combatants lead readers into a bigger payout later when Andrea joins the party. The art mirrors the mood of coping with loss as the issue progresses.

Ian’s frustrations stand out as he lets readers in onto where his thinking is leading to. The concluding pages give a great surprise to what has been an excellent return for the team of the All-Nighter Diner.

FINAL GRADE: 9 OUT OF 10

The supernatural heroes helmed by Zdarsky and Loo return for a fantastic start to the final arc. The loss of Alex haunts the team with with sharp writing and excellent visuals to set the stages for an unforgettable finale. Don’t miss the beginning of the end this week for New Comic Book Day!

This week we dive back in to the Hall of Armor to take a look at the Iron Man Armor Model 12! Created in Iron Man 290 by Len Kaminski and Kevin Hopgood, this armor was remotely piloted by Tony Stark while he was suffering severe nerve damage.

NYCC 2023 Recap: A New Awesome Adventure

I have never been to New York Comic Con before. It was on my bucket list for a long time. Besides San Diego Comic Con, it would be the greatest honor to go and experience it. I was able to receive a press pass under the Nerd Initiative banner, and additionally with my American Disability Act sticker. I attended both Friday and Saturday, and I geared up to be around fellow people who love the same things I do.

On Friday, it was just a day to familiarize myself with the Javitis Center. Most of the levels of the convention center had different things going on. Artist Alley, Show Floor, Food Trucks, and Panels. I was able to go shopping on that first day, and I purchased some figures (like my Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece) and  some merchandise from different booths. I was not able to go to any panels, because the Chris Evans panel was on Saturday.

On Saturday was the most exciting day. I was able to score a ticket to be at the panel to see Chris Evans. As most people know, he couldn’t talk about the projects he’s in now, or the past. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, he talked about other topics. Like him being newly married, his dog Dodger, and also some different holidays that he loves.  Chris Evans was very personable, and he thanked everyone for supporting him thus far. 

After Chris’s panel, I went off to other panels. I had the opportunity to go to the CrunchyRoll panel, which they talked about a variety of Anime coming out.  Here are some of the anime announced:

Saturday night, was the hi light of my New York Comic Con experience. I had the pleasure of meeting up with the Nerd Initiative crew to host a panel with Oscar-award winning artist John Caglione Jr.  He discussed his process, and his passion on being a makeup artist. He answered questions from the audience. John also brought his Oscar, which we got to see and hold in person.  He took some pictures, and was able to sign and personalize for people. It was amazing, and the Nerd Initiative crew who hosted, was incredible. John actually got to show his work on Michael, and he did a fantastic job. 

This year’s comic con was amazing. It was my first year, so I definitely had to get used to, and get my bearings around the convention center. I will definitely be going next year, and I will have a better understanding of the center itself.  I am honored to represent Nerd Initiative and also see so many cosplays, and people in general who love the same things I do. As well as just being around people who embrace anything related to nerdy and comic book content. Until next year!

Curve ball opening we aren’t jumping in RIGHT where we left off! We go right to Amber Beach Dinosaur Zoo! Dr. Morgan is trying to figure out waht the heck is wong with the grid. Luckily Keeper had brought Ivan and Koda back to their time.

Mistress Vile shows up with Dark Spector following behind. and they can feel the power of the grid is strong in this dimension. Some of the guys morph BUT Shelby warns them not to and boom next thing you know we got a new “spectorized” evil Dino Charge rangers. Even Keeper has been influenced by the infection of the grid sneak attacking Kendall.

Back in our Dimension

Billy is at the Pormenthea and they are under attack when he goes outside to solo an elongating deranged doll villain he might be a bit over his head till he gets an assist from the Blue and Yellow Drakkon Rangers. Being who they are from their dimension, they make short work of the demonic dolly just by cutting off its head, regardless of Billy’s asking them not to.

Coinless Bulk is trying to fix Alpha 5 but luckily Billy has installed some extra firewalls to prevent him from being tampered with a. Scorpina and Kiya start quipping back and forth while Coinless Trini is overcome with emotion seeing Billy running to him with a Zord-sized hug. As Billy gets caught up he questions HOW this motley crew became Rangers, Drakkon makes his magnanimous appearance. Billy morphs and stabs Drakkon with his Power Lance! It takes all the other Drakkon rangers to stop him and Zordon finally speaks up.

Somewhere in Hyperspace

The Hyperforce team and speeding through space and time. After getting a message from Zordon and Drakkon. They explain they are “picking up strays” as in Kendal and Taylor. They try to formulate a plan to save as many rangers as they can but Mistress Vile and Dark Spector have the Master Arch on their side and can be anywhere in seconds. As always Billy has…. A PLAN!

Billy and Coinless Trini head to the now busted Master Arch here on Earth and using the Power Eggs he received from the now deceased Grace. he uses their residual energy to try and “reboot” the Arch and get the upper hand on the villains.

Well, that didn’t go the way they wanted…….

Thoughts from THE GRID

Okay, I’ll say it, Missy is just playing right in her wheelhouse, and I can’t complain! Knowing her history with the Hyperforce team it’s an obvious choice to incorporate them into the larger narrative! I personally hope that Jack, Marv, and Joe meet up with Farkus, Preston, and Koda because DOPPLEGANGERS!

I’m glad to see the Power Eggs got scrambled so quickly, glad they didn’t become a dues ex machina down the road. Using the residual Morphin energy to make them go boom gave me HARDCORE RPM BLUE vibes! You know what I’m talking about.

How about starting off over in the Dino Charge universe?! What a great keep you on your toes opening. Seeing that Kendall now has her doctorate is so freaking cool! I chatted with Claire Blackwelder last PMC and she hoped that one day her character would become a Doctor, and the grid provides!!

I didn’t mention there was a little subplot about the balance of Evil power but let’s be honest there’s going to be a betrayal moment cause….. Power Rangers. I just want to see how it pans out.

For this entry, we have arrived at the penultimate issue of the current story arc from an award winning series. Ever since its’ BOOM! STUDIOS debut, the saga of Erica Slaughter has entranced readers with its powerful storytelling and chilling terror.

Racking up honor after honor, the series is poised (post SAG strike) to make a huge splash on Netflix. In the meantime, comic book readers are treated to a deeply intense tale that is poised to combust!

SOMETHING IS KILLING THE CHILDREN #34 by James Tynion lV, Werther Dell’edera Miquel Muerto and Andworld Design presents the calm before a storm that has been building for months. Let’s not waste another second and dive into this latest chapter, shall we?

Tribulation, New Mexico has been the epicenter of the latest arc. With a family being violently murdered by the Duplicitype (who now has taken the form of a certain monster hunter), the lone survivor, Gabi, has been under the custody of Riqui. With a growing body count, Erica Slaughter has re-emerged from being off the grid to end the killings.

Her return hasn’t gone unnoticed as the Order Of St. George has unfinished business with her. They have unleashed the deadly force of nature known as Cutter to eliminate her. With personal attacks breaking her like the death of Big Gary, readers have seen why Erica is a character that has won fans over. Through this fire, Erica remains standing and poised to finally end the evil once and for all.

This issue opens with Erica practicing riding a horse. Erica needs to strike from a distance to kill the Duplicate. Riqui and Erica have a tense conversation knowing what is about to unfold. With poisoned arrows and bow ready, Erica is ready. Riqui has doubts.

While this is happening, Gabi is inside the secluded ranch where the three are hiding. Unfortunately, someone else has found them: CUTTER! As Gabi screams, the monster starts approaching from up the road! The tension is so heavy as reader brace to a fight that truly feels grave. What will Erica do? The pace speeds up to an absolute jaw-dropping final panel. Brace for impact because the drama hits the wall hard with an unforgettable issue!

Nobody does slow build drama better than Tynion. Nobody. this might sound like a broken record at this stage but WOW, the structure of this issue alone is amazing! The conversation between Erica and Riqui plays off as a final goodbye. The feelings are doubt and struggle. This adds so much to the eventual moment of the fight.

The appearance of Cutter is fantastic as she strikes in such a manner that makes her a villain you love to hate. The pacing ramps into high gear once she appears and never looks back. readers can’t help but be locked in and be floored at the closing moments. If there was any question of why this series gets so much hype, read this issue.

Dell’edera and Muerto craft the “calm before the storm” with poise. The opening sequence seems peaceful but filled with tensions. The mannerisms of both Erica and Riqui do not seem confident but they press forward. The panels where Cutter strikes hit readers with intense danger.

This is upstaged (briefly) with a full page shot of the monster/Erica combo walking towards the ranch. The art depicts the franticness of events with subtle glee from Cutter looming. The ending panels will leave readers in pause and the wait for next issue will be extremely tough. What an issue!

FINAL GRADE: 9.5 OUT OF 10

The slow build pays off huge as a showdown months in the making explodes off the pages of an undeniable issue. Tynion, Dell’edera and the team impact readers with superb writing and intense art to send Erica Slaughter into her gravest challenge yet. This is an absolute must buy on New Comic Book Day!

For this entry, we are diving back into the Energon Universe with arguably the breakout title of 2023. Since it’s debut, the story of Darak and Solila has been a huge hit with fans. Nearing the completion of its’ first arc, there are many questions to where the unlikely duo heads next. With the addition of Transformers and the upcoming G.I. Joe related books, there is no doubt that the story is just getting started.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue begins with both Darak and Solila being detained on Zertonia. When Solila thought she was making a deal returning to her home, it turns out there was more double-crossing to be had. Darak is assessing the danger they’re in while Solila is processing what’s next. Readers see the pair try reasoning the situation before Darak is led away for interrogation.

Meanwhile, Solila is visited by a surprise figure: Mistress Vill. Readers quickly find out there is a connection between the two as Solila is reffered to as a “Keeper Of The Light”. This does bother her as she pleads she has no ties to anyone. The conversation concludes with a new possible direction for Solila in light of recent actions.

As for Darak, his imprisonment continues and hope looks bleak. He keeps a good front but the torture wears on him. Darak’s luck might have changed as some help appears in an unlikely place.

How do the pair survive what’s next? Readers see more players enter the game of control as the story progresses.

With mounting stakes, the unlikely pair have their destinies in their own hands. What path will they choose? If the final pages are any indications, the secrets of the Sacred Ring are about to explode!

Just when readers think they know the answers, Kirkman switches up the questions. The mystery surrounding Solila drives the main focus of this issue. Returning home, there is a sense of danger and grave consequences after her initial arrival. With the introduction of Mistress Vill, Kirkman constructs an engaging situation for the book’s most enigmatic character.

Equal billing is also shown to Darak’s new direction. The reveals of where he is heading now is an exciting change to the story. With the addition of many new players, the direction of the book can shift gears easily. Both roads look to lead back to a confrontation and this is nothing but win for the readers.

De Felici and Delpeche present the tensious mood between the leading pair with very noteworthy visuals. The opening scene in detainment is a strong moment with the body language reflecting the trouble they are in. The conversation plays out well with the mannerisms being showcased through their masks.

There are some great Transformers influenced pages to break up the story which long time fans of the “Robots In Disguise” will be excited to see. Darak’s story escalades quickly and the art team gives the readers a climbing theme of anxiousness to see where he heads now. The closing moments tie both characters’ new directions together, ending the issue with much to break down.

FINAL POINT: 9 OUT OF 10

The universe of Void Rivals grows with more combustible elements thrown in the mix. Kirkman, De Felici and the team present new consequences for Solila’s actions with fantastic writing and art. The series heads into unknown territory and this issue is one you simply can’t afford to miss on New Comic Book Day!

Fire Power issue #28 from Skybound Entertainment/Image Comics continues to impress with its family-themed storytelling and unique narrative elements. The concept of writing letters from the kids to the grandparents adds a layer of depth to the story and allows readers to explore events from a fresh perspective.

The children’s view on the story not only provides insight into what happened but also sheds light on their evolving powers during training, making it a unique way to fill in gaps and set the stage for future developments. Doug’s changing emotions throughout the issue add to the depth of the characters and amplify the danger posed by Master Shaw and the dragon.

The writing, storytelling setup, and execution are top-notch, delivering an emotional punch that resonates strongly with readers. The full-page spreads based on the content of the letters are a brilliant and unprecedented concept, immersing readers in the story in a new way.

The art and colors in this issue do an excellent job of conveying tone and emotion, enhancing the overall experience. The lettering, designed to mimic a teenager’s handwriting, adds a layer of authenticity and helps readers see events through Doug’s eyes.

With just two issues left in the series, the anticipation for the conclusion is bittersweet. Fire Power continues to be a standout title It’s a must-read for fans of the series and anyone looking for a unique and emotionally charged comic book experience.

The Schlub from Dark Horse Comics Issue 3

The first two issues have been action packed fun with lots of humor sprinkled throughout. This issue was no different. However, in this issue we get more into the meat and potatoes of the characters, which is where all the good stuff is. This Freaky Friday story of Roger the Dentist, switching places with Cirrus the Superhero continues to make us laugh and take us by surprise. We last saw Roger (as Cirrus) having to answer for his over the top actions in stopping a group of villains. He still hasn’t mastered his newfound (and potentially temporary) powers, and no one can know who he really is. That’s right where issue 3 then kicks off.

The Story for Issue 3

Very few stories have the ability to change gears and interweave emotions as well as Stegman and Porter do. We kick off this story with an almost awkward and hilarious confrontation between Roger and a group of superheroes. Then cut to this intense battle all the while Sarah (Roger’s ex-wife), is on a date with a toxic cowboy too big for his own boots.

This issue then wraps up in an unexpected turn of events. Cirrus’ perfect existence seems to suddenly make Roger’s miserable life not seem so bad.

The Art

Neither of us can say enough about how much we love this art. Tyrell continues to paint a beautiful portrait of destruction and heroism through his use of colors and the amount of detail he uses in every panel. The colors and details help tell the story while also keeping it a lot of fun. The expressions on our main characters’ faces is also very important to convey the confusion and feelings that they’re experiencing while in another person’s body. Seeing Roger (as Cirrus), attempt to not look confused, is absolutely nailed every time. Roger definitely wears his emotions on Cirrus’ face.

The Schlub Issue 3 Rating 9.5/10

This story continues to grow. We keep getting deeper into the back story of Sarah and Roger. Meanwhile, the villains and superheroes get more and more interesting (and entertaining) with each issue. This story is both full of humor and emotion which isn’t your typical run of the mill superhero story. This continues to be an absolute must pull!

Welcome to an all new edition of Parlay points, the comic book review blog to the ODPH Podcast!

For this entry, we’re checking out a brand new series that is sure to be talked about by fans. With such hits as Nocterra, Deathstroke, the Tenth and Batman on his resume, the art of Tony Daniel has been winning fans over for quite some time now. However for this series, Daniel is pulling double duty with writing a tale of mystery and supernatural elements.

EDENWOOD #1 from Daniel, Jay David Ramos, and Nathan Kempf for Image Comics brings the action as an unlikely hero is thrusted into the midst of a dangerous conflict. Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening here, shall we?

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The story begins in Wiliam’s Bay, Wisconsin . A group of young teens are walking around a lake area. The conversation seems centered around word of the Edenwood, an area that is the last line between NECRONEMA and the United States. Adelai, one of the young teens breaks away from the group looking for someone in the woods.

Once she enters the shrouded area, a mysterious stranger appears. His name is RION. Apparently, Rion is looking for Pip (a missing dog). The couple shares an embrace but their happiness appears to be short-lived. Loud noises fill the sky. The group left behind appears to be rattled, while the happy couple seems oblivious to the event.

It is only when Adelai sees Pip running, the course of events changes. Adelai chases after Pip but disappears. Rion follows and finds Pip’s skeleton. With no sign of anyone in sight, an explosion knocks Rion off his feet. When he stands back up, he is in a completely new environment.

Where has Rion landed? A wounded soldier pleads to Rion for help. As the young man approaches, a trap is revealed. How does he survive? Readers buckle in for a story that escalades quickly with its drama and conflict. Once the final act begins, there are more questions to be had heading into the next chapter. The biggest one is posed with the final image capping off one heck of a debut.

Daniel gives readers a solid introduction into a world filled with excitement and secrets. Rion takes the lead being the unlikely lead for the ever-evolving tale. Daniel doesn’t give him time to process events as he’s literally thrown into conflict in the second act. Readers pick up quickly how the overall danger is building.

With well paced action, the story moves very swiftly. Once the final act begins, the time jump doesn’t hamper where events lead to. The stage is set for more to come and there’s a great deal to process. This chapter is an absolutely engaging starting point to jump on board with.

The art shines on each page. The subtle beginnings of the innocence of youth kicks the issue off. The group of kids don’t seem too phased by events via their mannerisms.

However, this changes quickly when the conflict comes right before them. Rion demonstrates a wide range of emotions but the middle point is where he grows. With the traps’ fallout, readers are treated to a stunning near-full page spread of action.

This page moves Rion into a new stat quo which never loses sight of the overall themes. There are quite a few full page panels near the end of the book to elevate the tension, but none bigger than the final image.

It’s a great ending spot for this chapter but there is much more building with this series to be excited about.

FINAL GRADE: 9 OUT OF 10

Tony Daniel welcomes readers into a fantastic new world overflowing with fantasy and intrigue. Solid writing and electric artwork brings out the best of a young upstart hero with the best yet to come. This will be one to watch for on New Comic Book Day.
