THE PERIL OF THE BRUTAL DARK: AN EZRA CAIN MYSTERY #4

Creative Team – Chris Condon, Jacob Phillips, Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou

Published by DC Comics

Catch up with The Peril of the Brutal Dark: An Ezra Cain Mystery #3!

The Story

The Peril of the Brutal Dark: An Ezra Cain Mystery continues to impress with the fourth issue, as excitement rises to an all-time high. After meeting the missing man he’s been looking for, Ezra gets to meet him at the Brooklyn Bridge. Learning what he already knew, Mr. Meyer tells Ezra he’s in danger. That couldn’t be proven more true in what takes place next, on the bridge. An erratic car chase, a mechanical menace, and Ezra blamed for a murder. As wild as all this was, this occurrence wasn’t even the wildest thing that happens in this comic. Now on the run from the police, Ezra has to stop the big bad thing that’s right around the corner.

Cover art by Jacob Phillips. Published by DC Comics

Chris Condon knows exactly how to keep the reader hooked into the story and he does just that. The story starts on a quiet but dangerous note, and the excitement doesn’t stop there. We learn more about the forces Ezra is up against, and at this point, all hope seems lost for Ezra to put an end to all of this.

What we also see is Ezra more vulnerable than he’s ever seemed before. Beaten down, out of answers, and lost on what to do, Ezra still keeps pushing because there’s no one else in the world that can fix this. If you haven’t gotten a chance to dive into The Peril of the Brutal Dark: An Ezra Cain Story, there’s no time like the present! You won’t regret giving this run a shot!

The Art

The artwork of the fourth issue is probably the most exciting it’s been in the comic run, and that’s saying something. Perfectly capturing the grittiness of the story, Jacob Phillips is able to contrast the darker art with the explosive and vibrant artwork that the story leads to. What sticks out the most to me in this issue is the facial expressions of the characters, who practically tell the story themselves with their looks. Ezra is pretty emotionally driven in this issue compared to the other issues and you can see it perfectly clear on his face. Hats off to Phillips for conveying the emotions of the story in such a brilliant way.

Final Thoughts

The Peril of the Brutal Dark: An Ezra Cain Mystery #4 has me hooked and anxiously waiting to see what happens next for Ezra Cain!

SWAMP THING 1989 #2 – New Life Awaits

Creative Team – Rick Veitch, Tom Mandrake, Trish Mulvihill, Todd Klein

Published by DC Comics

Catch up with Swamp Thing 1989 #1!

The Story

Swamp Thing is in the midst of the journey of a lifetime, or several lifetimes, going through space and time. Not knowing how or why, he tries to figure out which way is up and why this is happening. Being thrown backwards through time, as far back as you can imagine, Swamp Thing’s destination is finally revealed! Meanwhile, the love of his life, Abby, is hours away from giving birth to their child of three different worlds. Abby wants her birth to be as close to nature as possible, and for her child to come into the world as natural as possible. So, she’s opted for no medication, so to say she’s struggling would be an understatement.

Cover art by Rick Veitch. Published by DC Comics

So much happens in Swamp Thing 1989 #2! Different characters, new plans, new destinations, and even John Constantine, all of this factors into this issue being as fantastic as it is. Once you dive in, you’ll see the heightened emotions, the complex story, and the mystery of it all that adds to the overall story brought to you by Rick Veitch.

The Art

Tom Mandrake, Trish Mulvihill and Todd Klein bring so much depth to the pages of Swamp Thing 1989 #2. The artwork takes you back to the time of older comics, which is a vibe in of its own. Mandrake has wonderfully detailed panels and full page looks that are absolute works of art. Mulvihill brings a lot of vibrancy to the pages, even more so than the first issue. With the colors, Mulvihill made this comic absolutely stunning. Todd Klein handles the lettering, and brings so much depth to the story through the dialogue. Together, the artists made this second issue even better than the first, which I didn’t think was possible.

Final Thoughts

Swamp Thing 1989 #2 continues the exciting and impactful hidden story of Swamp Thing. If you haven’t check it out yet, there’s no time like the present.

Overall Grade – 9.3/10

ZATANNA #2 – The Grand Tour Continues

Creative Team – Jamal Campbell, Ariana Maher

Published by DC Comics

Catch up with Zatanna #1!

The Story

This is a joint review from Matt of Hops Geek News and Megan from the Vigilante Vibes Podcast!

Matt – First and foremost, Agent Di Manes better hope Zatanna cannot get back up, because he has set her up and caused all sorts of chaos and havoc. I love that Jamal dives into the Voodoo magic and history a bit in this issue, as it’s something that I have always been fascinated by. We get a little bit into what Agent Di Manes is up to; however, there is still so much left to explore. They appear to be letting Zatanna do their job for them. This addition has me curious about the endgame. Aside from that, I love how Jamal utilizes music and mixes in magic with music as well. Music can make us feel so many different things, and it has a magical spell on us when that song hits just right. Add in Voodoo and the ability to bring out spirits, and I am sold on the direction of this run!

Cover art by Jamal Campbell. Published by DC Comics

Megan – Jamal Campbell is continuing to impress with this second issue and it was created with the Zatanna fans in mind. There’s so much depth to this issue, that it feels so much more than just one singular comic. The Mistress of Magic’s job isn’t easy and that’s proven time and time again, but if there’s anyone that can manage it, it’s Zatanna.

Zatanna is on her grand tour as the Mistress of Magic and her next stop is in Tennessee where she hopes to find help from a friend of the ghost variety. Living it up in Memphis to the sound of soulful music, Zatanna hopes to get help with a dangerous spirit who has murder on the mind. Meanwhile, the Department of Occult Affairs follows her every move, making her mission even more complicated than it already was. Agent Di Manes needs to watch his back because Zatanna is not the one to mess with.

The Art

Matt – Jamal may be producing some of the best artwork in comics currently. Every panel and every page blows me away with the colors and the way there are variations of blues that range from softer, such as with the spirits, to darker blues in magic. The page that blew me away most was the musical sequence, with how the musical notes broke up the sequence of the full page layout, and there was incredible attention to detail throughout it. Ariana’s lettering almost has a ghost-like feeling to it when in this spirit world, and when it comes time for Zatanna to speak her magic, I love the subtle shift in the lettering for dialect.

Megan – Jamal Campbell is someone of many talents. Writing, story creating, and artwork. When you open Zatanna #2, you’re treated to a mystical wild ride that’s covered in magic and panels that are nothing short of stunning. Each page is drenched in detail and leaves all the magic on the table, showing you exactly what you’re going to get with the Mistress of Magic. The colors are absolutely beautiful with a perfect mixture of vibrancy and dark tones. Ariana Maher handles the lettering, and does so in a way that brings the magical vibe to the dialogue. With some excellent use of sound effects and the tone of the story perfectly captured through the words, Maher wraps the comic in a perfect bow.

Final Thoughts

Matt -10/10. This is perhaps some of the most under-the-radar work from DC and every publisher in production. The artwork alone is a story that flows so magnificently from panel to panel. This mysterious game between Di Manes and Zatanna has my full attention.

Megan – 10/10. Zatanna #2 proves that the first issue wasn’t just a strong start, but an example of the high quality work you can expect to see from Jamal Campbell and Ariana Maher on Zatanna.

Overall Grade – 10/10

ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN #20: The Deal With the Devil

Diana has an unbreakable will and the power to match it; however, what happens when the less fortunate are dealt the same fate as she? More so, what happens to the ones Diana cares for as they are tangled in the web being spun by her enemies? The finale of The Season of the Witch is here!

Absolute Wonder Woman #20. Credit DC Comics. Cover by Hayden Sherman and Jordie Bellaire

Creative Team: Kelly Thompson, Hayden Sherman, Jordie Bellaire, and Becca Carey.

The Story:

This has been an exhilarating ride of an arc as Diana and Zatanna have joined forces against someone who wishes to see Diana dead. Kelly Thompson manages to find new ways to creatively tell the story and weave in new characters as well as stakes. I love the subtle manner in which we are slowly seeing the transition from friend to future enemy with Barbara as well. Diana was being tortured, and that never bothered her, but seeing Barbara held against her will strikes the deepest of emotions.

This story is all about the gods, and we are even gifted a touching moment with Hades and Persephone, which has unintended consequences. I am in love with the lore and how this has all been unfolding in such a unique way.

The Art and Letters:

Sherman and Bellaire are amazing and continue to amaze me with the creativity they have with the artwork. For example, the sound effects on a page are so much more as they make use of it and work artwork within the letters. Even when given a splash page, they break it up into shards of glass, all showing us various details and emotions that are being portrayed.

When it comes to coloring, there is a wide variety that is on display. The Salt Flats have a beautiful and soft tone, and then we shift to a full page of Diana being tortured, which is deeply and darkly colored. Becca’s lettering brings life to the pain Diana is feeling and her exasperation. As she is shocked and tortured, we hear the level of concern for Barbara at the same time. It builds her character and speaks volumes to who she is.

Final Thoughts:

Absolute Wonder Woman #20 is a tea kettle that is now screaming out. We’re at a boiling point in this story as Diana’s battle against this unknown person out to destroy her proves futile again and again. It’s a descent into madness and crafting a tale of betrayal for a familiar foe, and this is a story that works so well.

THE FLASH #33: Time’s Running Out!

Time’s running out as the nuke is set to go off any moment now and destroy not only the city but everything that Wally loves! He has checked everywhere in the city, even breaking his own rules and a few laws along the way. However, with the help of his wife, Linda, and his unlikely ally, Captain Cold, they just may be able to crack this case and save the day before it’s too late!

The Flash #33. Credit DC Comics. Cover by Gavin Guidry and Adriano Lucas.

Creative Team: Ryan North, Adriano Lucas, Gavin Guidry, and Buddy Beaudoin.

The Story:

North has built up the anticipation for this final issue of this incredible mini-saga and takes us home in truly heart-stopping fashion. I cannot get over how well-written Wally is behind Ryan North, who delivers excellent inner monologuing that makes Wally West perhaps the most relatable superhero. There are hilarious moments with him being forced to break some rules, leading him into people’s bedrooms, and he swears he is no pervert. The banter between Captain Cold and Wally is top tier.

The entire mini arc leading towards the plot of being a Bond movie was hilarious all at the same time. It has injected so much fun into this run that is now 33 issues deep, and bringing new life to it at the same time. I left this issue wanting more team-ups with Cold and West, and Wally’s newest ability has me heavily intrigued.

The Art and Letters:

Guidry and Lucas bring out some exquisite panel work and designs with this issue to match the intensity. I particularly loved how they show an overview of the city and trace Wally running through the streets, and little bubbles show each of his stops. It’s a clever way to show his race against time and super speed while still giving us insight into his search for the bomb. The art is lighthearted until Wally finds the suspect, and the use of darker colors and shadowing shows the tone shifting. It’s subtle; however, it’s effective and reminds the reader that this is not all fun and games.

Beaudoin’s lettering shifts to match the tones, and I love how he manages to make the jokes even land on the panels as well. It can be hard to bring out sarcasm through reading, but the way the lettering is done manages to extract the right amount every time. Even the minor defeated Captain Cold when he didn’t get his gold, as the lettering is a tad smaller and expresses disappointment.

Final Thoughts:

I loved the ending The Flash #33 delivers on this 3-issue arc. There is a beautiful blend of humor and intensity as the stakes are higher than ever. Anytime a billionaire gets taken down is a good day in my book. The little glimpses into Wally’s life, if he ever were a villain, got a chuckle from me. It’s a smartly written and detailed issue that injects a whole new life into this run.

SUPERMAN: FATHER OF TOMORROW #1: Something More

We know the tale: the planet Krypton explodes, not without sending a lone rocket hurtling into space, where it crash-lands in Kansas. However, the inhabitant inside this rocket isn’t our usual suspect but instead, it’s Jor-El. He struggles to fit in with his new life, and after his adopted brother experiences a medical emergency, he realizes it is time to be something more; it’s time to be SUPERMAN!

Superman: Father of Tomorrow #1. Credit DC Comics. Cover by Danny Earls.

Creative Team: Kenny Porter, Danny Earls, Nick Filardi, and Lucas Gattoni.

The Story:

I am excited to see a different take on the classic Superman tale. Having an adult Jor-El land on Earth and see the Kents as his adoptive family, more so his adoptive siblings, adds a unique spin on the tragic beginnings of a lone Kryptonian. There are hints of familiar characters such as Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. What makes this intriguing is seeing them as children and how they fit into this story.

Kenny builds up this version of Superman as someone full of confidence and poses some incredibly intriguing questions. He has the technology to make Earth better and to save the world and the people he loves. However, Krypton had rules, and he is bound by them despite no longer being there. I particularly love how it culminates in Superman facing danger head-on and how confident he is. Kenny has crafted an incredibly multidimensional character who has captured my attention without a doubt.

The Art and Letters:

This is a shiny world we are dropped into, and Earls and Filardi detail it with so much optimism within each panel. Despite being a character we are new to, the duo have drawn and colored him with an air of familiarity all the same. The Kent farm is still the warm and welcoming farm it has been throughout its rich history in DC, and Metropolis is detailed in such a manner that the city feels hopeful. It’s a setting that welcomes the reader easily into the story. Gattoni’s lettering helps bring out the optimism and sometimes frustration that Jor-El faces as he has so much knowledge to give, but must temper it back.

Final Thoughts:

Superman: Father of Tomorrow #1 invites us into a new story that brings familiar faces and puts a spin on what we already know about Superman. The first issue paints a well-detailed picture of what we can expect in this run, and I am excited to see where this leads!

SUPERNATURAL Easter Eggs in THE BOYS

*This article was updated on May 26, 2026 to include more Supernatural Easter Eggs from the end of Season 5.

Season 5, Episode 5 of THE BOYS on Prime Video, had the Supernatural reunion that the Spn Family had been terrifyingly waiting for. Especially after THE BOYS season 5 trailer featured the song Renegade by Styx. Which is well known as an epic needle drop from season 2 of Supernatural in the episode Nightshifter. THE BOYS Season 5 Episode 5, “One-Shots” delivered a collaboration of stories focusing on different perspectives of some of the supporting characters. We wrapped up with Soldier Boy, who has become a main character in this final season.

Check out a full Recap and Review of the Episode “One-Shots”

***WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD***

Supernatural Easter Eggs in “One-Shots”

With all of the overlap on and off screen from Supernatural to The Boys, I have to assume whoever was part of the set design in this episode had to have worked on Supernatural as well. Or they just got some fantastic direction. Here are some of the Easter Eggs I caught in “One-Shots.” Let me know in the comments what I missed.

Misha Collins (Malchemical), Antony Starr (Homelander), Jensen Ackles (Soldier Boy), Jared Padalecki (Mister Marathon) Photo Credit: Jasper Savage/Prime Copyright: © Amazon Content Services LLC

  • So many movie posters! As soon as we walk in I spotted the below ones:
    • Mr. Marathon origins – Madame Marathon, and the poster, Let There Be Rampage both star Jared and Misha’s characters;
    • Mr. Marathon Vampire Hunter;
    • Ghost Runner 2 – A Supernatural Speedster. This one even used the Supernatural font.
  • As Homelander commented on them not being legit Vought movies, or part of the VCU, Mr. Marathon comments that he’s “still making magic.” Something he learned from Rowena perhaps?
  • After we enter Mr. Marathon’s lair of Soldier Boy paraphernalia and a Diddy amount of “Puff Baby Oil” I got a couple more. The first may be a stretch:
    • We see a comic book that Mr. Marathon bought with Soldier Boy on the cover, and he’s saying “Get a Haircut.” Something Dean quite often comments about to Sam with him always insisting on having long hair.
    • There is another movie poster in this room that seems like an Easter Egg, but this time it has Soldier Boy on it. It’s Ghosts of Hanoi. We’ve seen this poster before, and it could simply be because he is a soldier suffering from PTSD, despite claiming he doesn’t have shell shock. But also… ghosts.
    • As Mr. Marathon goes to tell Soldier Boy a story about Homelander and Mischa Barton, he starts with the line, “So get this…” This is Sam Winchester’s go to line anytime he’s learned something in Supernatural and wants to tell Dean or Castiel. So subtle, and so perfect.
    • Mr. Marathon’s super power is he can run fast. A parody of The Flash of course. In Supernatural Sam runs. Dean says someone better be chasing him. As Sam then replies that running is good for you, Dean tells him it’s not. In the end, running didn’t seem to work out well Mr. Marathon. Dean warned him.
    • My last one I picked up was when the comedians/celebrities are all panicked because Mr. Marathon just “Robin-ized” Will Forte. Soldier Boy leans down and tells Christopher Mintz-Plasses and Kumail Ali Nanjiani, “I’m gonna get you out of here, but you need to do exactly as I say.” This seemed like such a Dean line. The difference is Dean meant it. Soldier Boy was just using them as human shields.

Supernatural Easter Eggs throughout The Boys

The actors alone could be a laundry list of Supernatural Easter Eggs. Black Noir, A-Train’s brother, Rufus, Splinter (that one many of us have tried to block out), Soldier Boy, Joe Kessler, Cate, Gunpowder, Robert Singer (he didn’t even get a new name), and more. Mr. Marathon and Malchemical can now be added to that list as well. That’s just on screen. With Eric Kripke and Phil Sgriccia behind the screen on both shows, it’s no wonder there is so much cross over. As well as so many Easter Eggs.

Antony Starr (Homelander), Jared Padalecki (Mister Marathon) Photo Credit: Courtesy Of Prime Copyright: © Amazon Content Services LLC
Antony Starr (Homelander), Jared Padalecki (Mister Marathon) Photo Credit: Courtesy Of Prime Copyright: © Amazon Content Services LLC

So here’s a few others I’ve found over the years, in no particular order. Some may be a stretch.

  • Robert Singer, saying Bobby Singer’s infamous catchphrases in season 4: “Idjits” and “Balls!”
  • Robert Singer himself is an Easter Egg. In the comics his character is Dakota Bob, but his full name is Robert Shaefer. It was changed to Singer since Jim Beaver played Bobby Singer in Supernatural (and lived in South Dakota). A nod to Robert Singer who directed, produced, and did so much more on Supernatural for years!
  • The spinoff, Gen V, starts off with a flashback to 1967 while we hear the song, Can’t Take my Eyes Off of You by Frankie Valli. This song has a line that says, “I love you baby.” Could it be a nod to the 1967 Chevy Impala, affectionately known as Baby? Maybe.
  • A Stormfront meme in season 2 has her getting run over by Baby.
  • Joe Kessler, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan (AKA John Winchester), encourages Butcher to sacrifice Ryan, his step-son. When Butcher asks if he would do the same, he says yes. He would sacrifice his son to save the world, and be proud. Well, in Supernatural he raised his sons to save the world. As a result they died… a lot. In the episode Lebanon, John Winchester said he was proud.
  • In season 4 we met a supe shifter that pretended to be Starlight. The shifter’s abilities right down to the eye flare seemed straight out of Supernatural.
  • This recent season we met a supe that makes people angry. I immediately thought of the Khan Worm created by Eve that ended up getting Rufus killed. It just had to get inside someone to make them homicidal.
  • Shortly after Soldier Boy is introduced we get a scene with him eating a burger. The preferred meal of Dean Winchester. Both played by Jensen Ackles. Maybe we’ll see him eating pie in Vought Rising.
  • January 24th is Dean Winchester’s birthday. It’s also the date listed on Becca’s fake tombstone as the day she died, and it’s the date on one of the videos where the Russians are experimenting on Soldier Boy. However, this is Eric Kripke’s wife’s birthday. So it’s most likely all just tied to her.
  • Earlier this season, as Firecracker and Soldier Boy discuss their guns, Soldier Boy pulls his “classic” gun out and describes it as an “All American Colt 1911.” Per the Supernatural Wiki page, Dean Winchester’s go to gun (the white one) is a more current version of that model: Colt M1911A1.
  • In season 1 of Supernatural we learn that Dean is terrified of flying. In season 5 Soldier Boy seems very irritated with supes that fly. From rolling his eyes as Jetstreak flies off, to telling Homelander he’s not going to carry him so they can fly. Later in season 5 Soldier Boy grabs Bombsight as he flies off. When they land, it’s confirmed: Soldier Boy hates flying, as he yells, “GOD DAMN IT, I HATE FLYING!”
  • Episode 7 of this last season gave us a BEAUTIFUL Easter Egg:

This was never gonna be a playing catch in the front lawn, fixing up the old impala bullshit

I’m sure every Supernatural fan channeled Leonardo DiCaprio and whistled and pointed at the screen. Or jumped up, like I did. This was not subtle to anyone who’s seen the show. Apparently the line was Old Ford; however, Phil Sgriccia (who directed the episode, and worked on Supernatural for over a decade) and Eric Kripke decided Impala was more fitting for Jensen’s last scene in season 5 of The Boys.

Source: Interview with Eric Kripke from Collider.

The original car intended for Supernatural was a Ford Mustang. So once again, Kripke put Ford in the corner, cause nobody puts Baby there. Yes, that’s a Swayze line. “Swayze always gets a pass.”

They Released the Outtake!

While the Easter Eggs are fun, awhile ago Jensen Ackles, revealed that while filming THE BOYS, they did a take with the three of them acting like Sam, Dean, and Castiel. Prime Video released it, and it’s hilarious, and full of Supernatural nods. Busty Asian Beauties even got a shout out. My only complaint, I wish “Dean” had said they should call Bobby instead of Dad.

Until next time, Carry On My Diabolical Sons! There’ll be peace when Soldier Boy is dethawed… again.

Thinking of going to a SUPERNATURAL Creation Con, check out Lauren’s review of her very first one. For more content on THE BOYS check out reviews of each episode, and head to our YouTube playlist: SATURDAYS ARE FOR THE BOYS.

Are you a fan of both shows? What’s been your favorite Easter Egg? Did I miss any? Let us know in the comments!
