On the road so far, we saw the boys go their separate ways for a bit in the SUPERNATURAL Special: Wayward. Now, while Dean continues to call and check on Sammy, he’s not having it, as he continues on his own mission.

The Story for SUPERNATURAL: SAM WINCHESTER #1
It’s 2005/2006 Sammy, so we kick off with a nightmare. Determined to hunt this monster alone (at the monster’s demand), Sam tells Dean to stop calling. Anyone who has ever watched an episode of Supernatural knows full well, that’s never going to happen. So now on the other side of the phone call that you can see in SUPERNATURAL: DEAN WINCHESTER, Sam’s mission continues.
A very frustrated Sam finds himself at what feels like a dead end. That is, until he finds a corpse with a clue. As he heads off to follow said clue, he’s suddenly faced with more questions than answers and a very surprising new monster?

The Art
Whether we’re in a nightmare, a gas station, or a cave full of sigils, the art was spot on. While I loved the scene where our “monster” does something to Sam, my favorite moment of the art was where we see Sam show his frustration. This is a comic book, but how he was feeling came through perfectly. Sam is as confused as the readers right now, and it was perfectly captured on his face as he attempts to figure out who or what this monster is that is pushing him, and why. I especially loved the annoyed brother look as he’s on the phone with Dean. It’s a look any fan has seen multiple times on Supernatural. This issue felt it was really about Sam figuring out what is happening to him, and the art in his expressions perfectly moved that story along.

Final Thoughts
SUPERNATURAL: SAM WINCHESTER #1 follows the events of the recent Wayward Comic, and it left me excited to see where the hell we’re going. Sam had a lot going on in the first couple of seasons of Supernatural, and that’s the Sammy we’re seeing now. He’s struggling with so many things at once. The loss of Jess, leaving the “normal” life he wanted, premonitions, and now a monster telling him what to do, and to ignore his brother. The one person who has always put him first. Where this road will lead, I’m not sure yet, but I can’t wait to see!
