Break Out

Issue three of this new series, Super Mondo Mega Mutts, from Oni Press is continuing to build a dynamic story for readers. This creative team is doing a great job of leaving no gaps from issue to issue. At no point will readers question what is going on because of the level of story development and background information. This is all due to the amazing writing style of Curt Pires.

Within this new issue readers are going to witness the Mega Mutts go through multiple levels of development. Especially their individual stories of them being locked up within a prison while also being tortured and experimented on. The experiments are conducted in attempts to figure out how the Mutts became mutated and a fierce fighting force. Each Mutts goes through their own struggle within prison. The narration and art work together to make this issue feel like you’re watching a hit series on television.

During all of the individual Mutt scenes readers will encounter various different “prison” situations. Within all of these situations the Mutt are being targeted by members of Chromedome’s gang. The prison situations depicted within this issue are during work, recreation time, chow time and at the prison library. All of these scenes are very commonly used within movies and television and carry the same tone within a comic book as well.

If is during the Mutts time in prison that a new ally of theirs teams up with their “leader” to break them out of prison and return them to the streets to continue their mission of being vigilantes. When reading this series, it definitely gives off Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) vibes. You have the Mutts (Turtles), their “leader” (Master Splinter), their new ally (April O’Neil), and their foes (Shredder and the Earth Protection Force). So far within this series this is the only similarity to TMNT other than the Mutts also being mutant as well.

Another great aspect of this story comes toward the end of this issue. The Mutts are introduced to the scientist who is responsible for their mutation. It is during this meeting that readers will get a complete backstory as to why the mutation took place and the trials that failed before these Mutts succeeded. There is also some very important information that is given to readers about the Mutts when this meeting takes place. I got the opportunity to speak with writer Curt Pires about this topic and this issue solidifies my initial question to him. I would love nothing more than to share that question with you readers, but that would spoil the story, and I am not here for that! Just know that things will potentially get brighter for the Mutts moving forward.

The Writing

Curt Pires is a dynamic storyteller. Within this series he is doing a fantastic job at creating an intriguing story that will make readers want more when they reach the last page. The plot development within this story is ever-growing, making this story entertaining to read. The individual character development segments of this story are only part of what makes it so captivating. The dialogue is just as entertaining as well. Is there some adult language used? Yes. But that does nothing more than add to the lore and tone of this story. If you are a fan of this story and the progression of it, I highly recommend you check out other works by Curt as well!

The Artwork

Juan Gedeon and Graphikslava are a perfect team for this story. The artwork is absolutely beautiful within this series. The pencil work is crisp and smooth giving definitive outlines for the coloration to fill. Speaking of coloration, it is spot on! There is a mixture of bold and dark colors that feed into the tone of this story. The shading is also a homerun! The details of this issue truly come out within the artwork. Especially during the prison panels of this issue. Big fan of the art style of this issue!

Jeff Powell provides the lettering for this series and is doing a great job with it. The dialogue and narration boxes are different from one another, helping readers know the different between thoughts and actual speech. The placement is great as well! Placement, spacing, and order of reading is phenomenal. The boxes are placed in areas that do not take away from the visual representation of the writing within the panels.

Final Thoughts

I am a Mega Mutts fan! This story gives off so many vibes of shows that I enjoyed as a child that I am instantly taken back to them. The dynamic story of lost dogs turned into mutant heroes is entertaining, especially when their banter with one another gives off “brotherly love” vibes. The progression of this story is at a very comfortable pace. Not too slow or extremely rushed. Giving readers the opportunity to enjoy the story as it builds. This series is turning into a must-read within my collection! It’s not too late to get your hands on all three issues. So when you’re at your local shop, make sure to pick up all three issues today!
