Sabotage

After a stellar debut issue comes the second installment of this new series, Super Mondo Mega Mutts. This second issue shares with readers a more in-depth look into the private sector company that is vigorously after the Mega Mutts. That company is, Grey Square. You can compare them to the Earth Protection Force (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – TMNT). Their sole objective is to hunt down these Mega Mutts and bring them back for not only questioning, but testing as well.

*** WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD***

Within this issue you will see behind the scenes political games being played between the government and Chromedome (Gang Boss). Now Chromedome has an ax to grind with the Mega Mutts for putting their noses in his business in issue one. So any way he can help in the capturing of the Mutts, he is going to do. So naturally why not team up with the government? “The enemy of my enemy is my friend,” right? So a plan is worked out to lure the Mutts out from their base of operations and capture them.

While all of this is going on you have the Mutts getting yelled at by their “boss” who is just this little itty bitty dog. Which is rather comical once you see the size variation between the boss and the mutts. This is where the story starts to make parallels to TMNT. The Mutts have broken a rule and brought back a human to their base. Who is this person? A reporter of course! This reporter has one heck of a background as well, covering war stories in the heat of battle. I am rather shocked at how well she is comprehending the fact that these are giant mutated dogs who now speak English and fight crime. She acts as if this is a normalcy within the present time.

Even though this is only the second issue of this series, I am completely engulfed in it. I am a huge TMNT fan and this story plays right up my alley. Mutated animals who fight crime to save a city they call home. But they are also working towards finding out where they originally come from in hopes of rejoining their owners. Which if this comes to fruition, I am going to be glued to this series to see how it unfolds! Will the original owners be accepting of them as they were before being mutated? Or will they be shunned away? I cannot wait to see what else comes from this creative team!

The Writing

Curt Pires is giving readers an entertaining plot! Some may criticize this as being a knock off of TMNT or Biker Mice from Mars. Don’t listen to them. Yes this story line has its similarities to those titles, but with various other aspects that make this story its own. The dialogue is comical and rough when needed. The plot line is not complex to follow and even adds in pieces of suspense and sadness. I am a fan of Curt’s and have yet to come across a piece of his work that I have not enjoyed!

The Artwork

Juan Gedeon puts his money where his pencil hits. This comic shows some of the smoothest work that I’ve seen. The definition and details of the Mutts is fantastic! I love the coloration of this issue and the simplistic cartoon feel of it. I would also love to see a “black and white” issue as well. Just to get a better glance at the amazing work of Juan. Even with drawing dogs, you can see and feel the emotions portrayed within the panels. Another aspect of the art that I enjoy is when the Mutts are blacked out and you see their silhouettes, in the visual of their eyes being white within the darkness. I fell in love with that look growing up watching Batman: The Animated Series.

Final Thoughts

This second issue continues to build the ever growing story of the Mega Mutts. Adding in governmental play along with emotional pull. The Mutts are doing what they can to fight crime in hopes of finding their way back to their owners. Drama, comedy and action sum up this issue and this series as a whole so far. If you are a fan of TMNT, I highly recommend you check this new series out from Curt and Juan! As I said before, Curt is introducing certain aspects of the backstory that make you wonder what will come next, and what you wish will come next.
