The Story
If you thought the first issue of Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy was compelling, then you’re going to love the second issue. Things are heating up quickly and with that comes even more to learn about Daniel, Black Tower, and the plan they’re trying to stop. In the first issue, it was established that books were stolen from a murder scene, and now we’re seeing that plan expand. The villain is one unlike Daniel has seen before. In a fascinating mixture of magic and evil, the villain is able to slip into the dreams of his victim and kill them while they sleep. Leaning heavily into the mystic factors of the story, Daniel is the only one that can help stop him as he’s an Esper, someone who can look into the minds of others. However, with slipping into others dreams comes rules to follow on how to get out safely, and Daniel is prepared to break them.
Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy #2 continues the compelling story of Black Tower and their mission with their newest employee, Daniel. The writer, Ram V, gives you different perspectives to get a clear idea of how unhinged and interesting the team really is. Whether it’s one of them getting close to the Russians, or another fellow employee of Daniel’s sleeping with a demon, each character pulls you in and leaves you wanting to know more. But the characters aren’t the only thing you get to know. As the universe expands, you’re learn able to learn about the great mixture of magic and espionage in this new world that Daniel is learning right alongside you. This is a whole new world that Ram V has created based on mythological and mystical legends and it’s all compelling, it’s fascinating, and it leaves me very excited for the next issue.
The Art
Mike Perkins, Mike Spicer, and Andworld Design do an excellent job at bringing the darker aspects of the story and making them shine brightly. Perkins’ drawings have great linework that provides the perfect amount of shading and detail that makes your eyes stay glued to the page. Mike Spicer handles the coloring and you can see where he had a lot of fun in this issue. Going from more muted tones to capturing the essence of magic through vibrancy has handled excellently. Personally, my favorite part had to do with the dreams themselves where Spicer provided a beautiful array of striking and bold colors that mde it feel like a dream world. Andworld Design handled the lettering of the comic and was able to put the tones of the story on full display in the dialogue. Whether it was the villains menacing tone or Daniel’s confusion, you’re able to experience the emotions of the characters perfectly.
Final Thoughts
Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy #2 continues the dark and strange story that keeps me on the edge of my seat. The characters are compelling, the story is fascinating, and the creative team is firing on all cylinders.
