The Story
In the last issue of New Titans, Yara had been troubled by constant nightmares and couldn’t understand why, but now we know it’s because her home was in trouble. Flora and the rest of the Titans, along with their new hire, Static, head to the Amazons. In the hidden city of Akahim in Brazil, the Esquecidas of the Amazon say that the Amazon and the spirits in them are uneasy and bothered. There’s a giant monster that has attacked the people of Brazil and all of the creatures that used to live in harmony with humans are now acting out. Flora, AKA Wonder Girl, wants to help her home and its people but some of the Esquecidas have proven to be less than thrilled with her return. The Titans are even less unwelcomed than Flora as outsiders are normally not allowed into the hidden city. However, tough times call for tough measures, so perhaps the Titans are able to sway public opinion.
What I loved about this issue is that while it’s a Wonder Girl-centered issue, we get the inner dialogue of Static throughout the story. Static is still going through his own struggles with his powers not working correctly after not using them for so long and it’s only a matter of time before the Titans find out about it. Until then, he’s trying to adjust to being apart of the team, but that’s easier said than done, especially when he steps into a magical hidden city that he didn’t even know existed.
The Art
Sami Basri and Bruno Abdias really captured the beauty of the hidden city of Akahim in the artwork. From the gorgeous mystical looks of the land to the beautiful looks of the Esquecidas, you could be in the same headspace as the Titans who were visiting the hidden city in Brazil. Along with that, there was some great work done with showing off different powersets that I absolutely loved to see.
Adriano Lucas handled the colors of New Titans #39 and made each page its own masterpiece. The colors were vibrant and light, capturing the beauty of Akahim. The characters all stood out in their own way with the use of darker tones juxtaposing the vibrancy, which was beautiful to see.
Steve Wands was the letterer of the comic and provided a beautiful flow of dialogue despite having so many characters in the story. What I really appreciate about Wand’s work is how well he uses sound effects to enhance the story. It worked excellently here, especially when Minhocão was involved.
Final Thoughts
New Titans #39 continues the high quality storytelling and artwork that has become a constant in this run. I’m very excited to see where this story in Akahim goes as I was locked in to this story thanks to the creative team!
