Tava Ren

Issue two of Star Wars: The Fall of Kylo Ren takes readers on a galactic journey through the past of Kylo but in the present. Within this issue you will see that Kylo still has a connection to Rey. Which if that continues to take place, that will present more problems for Kylo moving forward as the Supreme Leader. So much for him vowing to forgo his past completely and focus on the future of the First Order.

Speaking of Kylo’s past, readers are going to get another aspect of that when the Knights of Ren attempt to make a comeback. That’s right, the band is attempting a reunion tour pending the approval of the lead singer (Kylo). You are also going to witness some tension between the leader of the Knights of Ren (Tava) and Kylo. This adds a completely different dynamic to this story. There is tension because these two had what seems to be a short romantic relationship before Kylo became the new Supreme Leader.

Tava is a sneaky individual within this issue. Charles Soule does an excellent job of writing this character’s story for this issue. Making you look in one direction while ulterior motives are being played out in the other. The play on the romantic relationship between the two characters will divert you from the story. Making you attempt to “force communicate” with Kylo on the pages to not fall for girl who is playing with him!

Towards the end of this issue readers will be introduced to a new character that poses a valid threat to Kylo and the Knights of Ren. An interesting fight takes place between this new character and Kylo. During which the ulterior motive of Tava commences and the story starts to unfold even more. The way this issue ends will leave you wanting the next issue now just to see what this new character is capable of and how its presence is going to affect the Supreme Leader’s plans.

The Writing

Charles Soule brings captivating stories to Star Wars. Kylo Ren is one of those characters that I have such mixed feelings about and it never fails that by the end of the narrative I feel bad for the guy. Charles brings to the forefront a story of two previous romantic relationships within one issue. Which makes me want to dislike Kylo for somewhat going back on his word of “leaving his past behind”. The dialogue and narration carries more weight than just the words used. Context clues really provide an assist for the reader to grasp the nature of what is taking place. This is an entertaining and easy read for Star Wars fans.

The Artwork

Will Sliney and Guru-eFX continue their amazing work for this series. The art is very detailed on all fronts! The facial expressions of the main characters of this story give off so much emotion that it makes you feel the romantic tension between them. The coloration is fantastic! The accent colors within “energized” sections of the issue are fascinating! Kylo’s light saber looks terrific when in use during this issue. The details of the ships and their inner cabins make you feel as if you’re there inside them. These two artists should stick with Star Wars titles, because they are mastering it!

VC’s Joe Caramagna provides amazing work within this issue with lettering. The sizing and placement of the dialogue/narration bubbles is spot on, placed in areas of the panels/pages that does not take away from the art telling the story. The bubbles are easy to follow while reading. Joe is definitely a master of comic book lettering.

Final Thoughts

Issue two of this series provides a continuation from issue one with a lover’s quarrel from Kylo’s past in more ways than one. The friction between Kylo and Tava brings a different but familiar dynamic to Kylo’s story. That dynamic takes form with Rey at the beginning of the issue. This issue provides readers with anger, passion and deception. Being the second issue of this series it is proving to create much more struggles for Kylo as he enters his new role as Supreme Leader. Star Wars fans and Kylo Ren fans do not want to miss out on this series. Do yourself a favor and pick up this issue and issue one today!
