Catch up with The Uncanny X-Men #31!

The Story

I really thought I knew where this issue was heading, and if you think the same when you read it, just know that you absolutely do not. There’s so much packed into the pages of The Uncanny X-Men #32, that by the end of the issue, it’ll take a minute to set in. Gail Simone does what she always does with this run and gives you exactly what you didn’t know you needed.

The aliens have invaded the school dance, the Outliers are ready to prove themselves, and the X-Men are trying to wrap their head around the whole situation. Mutina said herself that these aliens do not fear the mutants, so the mutants have to find something they do fear. It won’t be easy, but with an all-star team up against this Brood, they don’t stand a chance.

This issue was the entire package. There was action, there was love, there was heartbreak, there was excitement all up and down the issue. This is what I want from comics. I want to feel moved, I want to feel excited, and I was to feel thoroughly disappointed when I reach the last page because that means it’s over. If you haven’t checked out this run, I’m going to sound like a broken record, but I cannot recommend it enough.

The Art

The artists really made this a gorgeous issue all the way through. Rogê Antônio, Jim Towe, Federica Mancin, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles brought all the energy of an alien invasion movie but gave it a great mutant twist. Antônio, Towe, and Mancin bring a huge amount of detailing that leaves nothing on the table. Wilson absolutely thrives in this issue, bringing so much vibrancy that gives the story that otherworldly vibe. Some of my favorite panels have to be whenever Calico is in her flaming glory, contrasting the greens and blue tones around her. Most of this book is nothing short of stunning and I think Wilson’s work on the colors is what takes it into orbit.

Final Thoughts

The Uncanny X-Men #32 brings this out-of-this-world arc to an end and we’re left on a very interesting note of uncertainty, sadness, and love. Gail Simone makes you feel every emotion and leaves you wanting more.
