“Hidden Springs #3” Review – The Monster, The Van and The Military

Man oh man is “Hidden Springs” shaping up to be one fun and intense rollercoaster ride! In case you missed the last issue, our ragtag group of elderlies decided to save this alien creature and got confronted with the mighty force of the US military. What will they do? Where will they go? Well, join me on this wild ride as I take a look at the latest issue of “Hidden Springs”!

The Writing

If you’re somehow this deep into the story and have yet to be hooked, I truly feel like Rob Williams will get you here. From the opening moments to the closing panels, I couldn’t put this issue down. The opening words about how monsters take all forms is something I feel can resonate with just about anyone. We’ve all experienced monsters, some of our own making, and this issue truly makes us relate to the characters. Wiliams captures this perfectly, truly speaking from the heart and soul, forcing us to take a good look in the mirror about how we treat others and what we can do to be better.

Adding to the excellency of the writing are his brilliant usages of humor, foreshadowing, and the classic bait-and-switch. Several instances left me reeling from laughter while others delivered an emotional gut-punch that I couldn’t expect. As I mentioned, the foreshadowing is there, but not in any way one might expect as Williams tricked me into one path when really it was another I should’ve been paying attention to. All in all, this was a truly amazing reading experience.

The Art

Matching with what Williams brought to the table this time around, Nil Vendrell and Berta Sastre truly delivered with the art and colors. While it may not seem like it at a glance, Vendrell’s style has so much character and personality that it’s almost hard to put into words. In just about every panel, he somehow manages to perfectly capture character emotions and impactful moments with movie-like quality. Through the line work and detail matched with the colors, I could feel the stakes of every moment.

Speaking of Sastre’s colors, they were truly jaw dropping here! The colors were such a perfect blend, working to fully envelop the reader into each and every environment. Not only that, but they truly brought out every emotion possible, especially with the intense reds and yellows in the moments they were needed most.

Final Thoughts

From the intense writing to the fantastic artwork, everything about “Hidden Springs” is amazing! In a story about monsters, Williams managed to capture the human experience. I can’t recommend this series enough, especially if you’re looking for something new and different.
