Excommunicated #3 – Much More Than A Friend

The Vatican is here. Will Sister Josephine be excommunicated? With the demon Edimmu, Josephine must try to get away. Father Santos is hot on his trail as Josephine threatens to understand the relationship between satan, hell, and the church. Allegiances will be tested and revealed. Writing

Another layer is revealed. Jeremy Robinson really pulled out all of the stops with this issue. Edimmu reveals a little bit more to Josephine, and she begins to realize there’s so much more at stake than she understands. I loved the way that Robinson handled Josephine’s interaction with Father Santos. You can feel the emotion and pain in her actions.

This issue really filled out the backstory for Excommunication. A few of the things that were revealed before were made clear while new adventures are released. Robinson takes familiar stories and tells them in a new exciting way that fits into this world

Art

While the story of Excommunicated #3 was great, it was Tiago Palma’s art that really shone in this issue. So many impactful and poster-worthy panels throughout this issue. Palma does a wonderful job conveying the emotions that Josephine feels. Her interaction with Father Santos would be felt even if Jim Campbell hadn’t included word bubbles. The introduction of some new characters allowed Palma to get really creative and that’s an area where he really shines.

Jim Campbell moved the story along beautifully while letting the narrative and the art shine through. The coloring from Manuel J. Rodriguez was perfect, capturing the darkness that hangs over this series like a haze. The result is a beautifully drawn and colored issue that pulls you into the page.

Final Thoughts

This entire series has been great. My only complaint with this issue is it felt a little short. I know there’s more being set up for the future, but it just felt like it ended a little suddenly. That being said, the issue was still both narratively satisfying and artistically beautiful. Excommunicated deserves a spot on your pull list.
