The Story
If you haven’t checked out Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, this is your chance to do just that! With DC’s Supergirl coming to theaters this week, there’s no better way to prepare then checking out Tom King’s work in the story the movie is pulling from. In this issue, we are introduced to Ruthye Marye Knoll, who has set out on a venture to avenge her father’s death. He was killed by Krem of the Yellow Hills, who is just as terrible of a person as you can expect. Ruthye decides the best way to get revenge is to seek out someone who’s strong enough to take Krem down. That person is Supergirl.
Tom King absolutely knocked this story out of the park. This is a story I always go back to read as there’s so many layers at play. You get to learn about Kara Zor-El, AKA Supergirl, as she does her best to steer Ruthye in a better direction than violence. Ruthye is a new character that we get to know who is basing her decisions on her need for revenge over her father’s death. The story is impactful, full of depth, and brings so many different perspectives to what’s right and wrong in the story.
The Art
What’s different about DC W.I.P. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #1 is that this is the original artwork of the story from Bilquis Evely. Seeing the steps that Evely goes through to create something so beautiful puts it into perspective just how truly talented she is. With the artwork being in black and white, you’re in awe at the authenticity of the drawings that all came together to give us the powerhouse of a story. What I really loved was at the end, you get to see sketches from Evely’s sketchbook of the characters, and see where it all started. It’s even more proof of how talented she is and how perfect of a choice Evely was for this comic.
Final Thoughts
I’ll never stop singing praises of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. DC W.I.P. Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a beautiful look behind the scenes of a generational talent that went into the making of this fantastic story.
