The Stories

MORE FROM NERD INITIATIVE HERE!

Summer of Supergirl Special #1 is made up of three different stories, written by three different writers, that all came together to answer the question “who is Supergirl?”. Kara Zor-El is unlike any other character and this comic tells exactly why. In the three stories, we see different situations where Kara shines the brightest. How she handles herself, how she treats others, and how she looks at situations differently than any other superhero.

In the first story, Main Man’s Best Friend, it’s a continuation from Lobo #4 where Lobo and Supergirl end up arrested after their super-pets cause havoc. The story shows how Kara is able to react rationally and truthfully even when chaos is at her front door.

In the second story, Lost Girls, we see two iconic characters, Supergirl and Mary Marvel, come together in support of each other, being exactly what the other needs. A friend, a confidant, a sister, both what each hero is looking for after a life of being an orphan and finding their own way.

In the third story, Who is Supergirl?, this is more a homage to Kara rather than a situational story. A look back into the incredible life of Kara starting from when she first landed on Earth to where she is now, a hero who only wants to help the greater good. All three stories pay so much respect and love to Supergirl showing what an absolute powerhouse she’s been from the beginning. There’s no better way to get excited for DC’s Supergirl movie than checking out this comic!

The Art

Each of the three stories has their own creative team, and each team brings their own unique talents to the pages of Summer of Supergirl Special #1. In Main Man’s Best Friend, Belén Ortega, Triona Farrell, and Becca Carey deliver what can only be described as chaotic goodness when it comes to the art. With any story that features Lobo, you can assume that the artwork will be as unhinged as Lobo is in the best way possible. That’s what this creative team brought to the pages and it was absolutely perfect.

In Lost Girls, Emma Kubert, Sandra Hope, Trish Mulvihill, and Ariana Maher all came together to make this start with high intensity action that ended on a beautiful and emotional note. Mary Marvel and Supergirl coming together, and being that shoulder to cry on for the other, will absolutely have you feeling every emotion of the story in the artwork.

In the final story, Who is Supergirl?, this is where we get so many looks from the past stories of Kara. Cian Tormey, Alex Guimarães, and Steve Wands bring so much depth to the history of Kara Zor-El by showing how powerful inside and out she is time and time again. The artists came together to create the perfect look back at the life of Kara, paying respect to the powerhouse she is.

Final Thoughts

Summer of Supergirl Special #1 was a beautiful homage made in honor of one of the most iconic characters in DC history. The writers and the artists brought so much depth to the pages of the comic. This is an absolute must have for your week’s pull lists!
