In the previous issue in this utterly fantastic run from Hannah Rose May, we lost yet another one of our girls. With the demon now having it’s sights set on Noa, it’s up to Ivy to get to the bottom of what’s going on before it’s too late. Will she succeed or will she end up becoming the demon’s next potential victim? Find out with me as I review the penultimate issue of “Smile: For The Camera”!

The Writing
Going into this new issue, I had the strangest feeling that this issue was going to be a bit different than the rest of this phenomenal run. I’m really happy that I was right, as Hannah Rose May expertly blended two perspectives here, pushing the story forward in a massive way as result. Not only did she find this amazing way to move Ivy’s story further, but every moment with Noa felt like it rose the stakes. It truly felt as if with each passing moment, the characters were running out of time, making my heart race.
I don’t know how she does it, but Rose May finds this way to make the reader root for these characters even when we know things may not work out. It really keeps me gripped as I turn each and every page, scared for whatever may happen to our remaining heroines. I know it’s something I keep saying, but this is all testament to just how well-versed in the horror space Hannah Rose May is. I wish this run could keep going, but alas, the next issue is the last.

The Art
Once again, as they always seem to do with whatever they work on, Miriana Puglia and Dearbhla Kelly absolutely brought their A-game here. The lines and colors both continue to be completely top notch while remaining properly bloody and grotesque. Everything from the off-kilter angles in some panels to the usage of color to portray different emotions and frightening moments is enough to put any reader in a state of unease. They both it more than their all and that really comes through. For even more of what Dearbhla Kelly in particular can do, be sure to check out “Justice League Dream Girls“!
Final Thoughts
What started as I run I went into blind has become one of my favorites out right now. Hannah Rose May continues to prove herself, leveling up and showing just how masterful of a horror writer she is. Her and her partners-in-crime prove that you can take a simple concept and expand it in such an amazing way to make it your own. If you aren’t reading “Smile: For The Camera”, you need to be.
