The Story

Jumping right into the story, we’re placed into a recurring nightmare that our main character experiences time and time again. It’s the story of when everything changed, when he went from being Frederic Atrecious, a child who had to kill his own brother after seeing his mother slain by the Sun Army and his abusive father sentenced to death, to Thelbe Jack. Thelbe Jack is a magic-wielding thief who’s constantly on the run.

Thelbe is currently on a mission to find an ancient relic called Vellanor’s Grief. The dark and magical relic is tied to death and misery, and everyone that owns the relic ends up dying. Thelbe isn’t the only person looking for the relic, as the Sun Army has been searching for it as well. With the Sun Army right on his tail, Thelbe makes a run for it. He thinks he’s finally lost the violent soldiers, but what he doesn’t know is that he’s still being watched by a mysterious visitor.

The Writing

Thelbe Jack: Seeds of Ruin #1 sets the tone immediately in the story, and the energy continues to soar throughout the comic. Compelling from the very beginning, the story brings so much world-building as well as a lot of mystery to the pages. Frank Goodie does a fantastic job at keeping you locked in and making you want to read more and more of this new world.

Thelbe Jack is a character that’s shrouded in his own trauma, and uses that to his advantage. As compelling as the story is, Thelbe is the driving force that makes you want to know more about his world. From the violent Sun Army to Thelbe’s past life, there’s so many places Frank Goodie could go with this story and I look forward to seeing where he takes it!

The Art

The artwork of Thelbe Jack: Seeds of Ruin #1 is as inviting as the story itself. Matching the tones perfectly, Slobodan Jovanović does a fantastic job at delivering raw and emotional artwork. Each panel is heavily detailed and leaves no stone unturned in terms of understanding the tones. Jovanović makes each page a black and white work of art that brings even more depth to the story of Thelbe Jack. While each page is black and white, the artist ventures out and uses bright red blood as a focal point on some pages, which makes the reader fully understand the magnitude of the situation. All in all, the artist brought this compelling story to life in a brilliant way.

Final Thoughts

The story captures your attention immediately and doesn’t let go until the very end, when you’re wanting to read more and more. This was a fantastic job by Frank Goodie!
