Sacrifices must be made to save the world, and all sacrifices come at a cost, no matter the size. Wally is coming into his own as year one ends; however, it comes at a heavy price. The showdown with Thawne is here, and it’s all hands on deck!

Creative Team: Jeff Lemire (WRITER), Nick Robles (ART and COVER), A.L. Kaplan (ART), Adriano Lucas (COLORS), and Tom Napolitano (LETTERS).
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
The Story:
Jeff brings us to the climax of the first year for Wally West, and he caps this issue off with a major bang. There are a lot of pieces and future storylines being put into place that, as one chapter closes, it leaves us hungry for so much more. Grodd meets his father as Wally loses his, as he sacrifices himself, pushing Thawne back into the Speedforce to save his son. It is two incredibly impactful and powerful moments on opposite ends of the emotional spectrum. As the dust is settling, I love how the Rogues themselves come back together and become “for hire,” which is leaving them open for more action down the road. I’m excited to continue this journey, and I have become a Wally West fan thanks to Jeff and what he has done here.
The Art and Letters:
The art is, as always, crushing every panel and making this story so electric. The team brings out the vibrancy and makes the most of every panel. There are moments of Wally and Thawne chasing one another down that are detailed so well, that you can feel the rush of the breeze as they zip by. The final scenes with Grodd and his father are heavy. Especially as the letters make the “All men are evil” trope land hard. This artwork has been nothing short of incredible and aids the story in every way.
Final Thoughts:
Absolute Flash #12 is the end of year one for young Wally West, and it ends on such a high note. His first big test is over, and there are many threads and storylines left on the table that I cannot help but be stoked to see what’s next. This is a must read heroes adventure story!
