Handbook Heroes: Part 1

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD*
Written expertly by Nick Winn and drawn with precision by Austin Baechle, this first part of the double feature book was an absolutely enchanting read. The pair did a fantastic job at capturing not just the style but the essence and feel of the original show while having an original flare of “Sunday morning newspaper comic”. Through every line of dialogue, I could hear their now famous voices while the story itself was something entirely new.

In this new story, we follow Finn & Jake as they set off to write a new Enchiridion. In previous issues, Finn & Jake fought the Lich and threw the previous Enchiridion into Finn’s “Lich-Finn” mind. For fans of the show that might be a bit confused, these comics follow an entirely different timeline. The way this was shown was clever, as some hints in both the art and writing were subtle while others were glaring to any longtime fan.

In a moment that really hits home for me, we jump to Marceline as she ponders things and visits Simon, aka Ice King. The story between them is one that’s always touched my soul, and that was fully done here as well. It’s so easy to tell that no matter the universe, their bond is always there.

Lemonhope, Alone: Part 1

Written by Elizabeth Brei with art by Cleonique Hilsaca and Heather Breckel, this part of the book just feels wholly unique & original. Taking place apart from the main story, we follow Lemonhope for a short while as he sings a song about loving being alone.

While the art remains fantastic and on-brand for Adventure Time, the lettering from Shawn Lee really carries here. Being a song, the lettering feels vibrant and looks like how birds sound singing their beautiful morning tunes. It’s also very wavy, being a perfect representation of singing.

Final Thoughts

The work put in here is an absolute home run across the board! An absolute must-read for any Adventure Time fan looking for more time with Finn, Jake, and the other denizens of the Land of Ooo.
