It’s an all-out battle from deep within the ocean, all the way to the tournament’s bloody fields. However, underneath the ocean, something is brewing. Something that is built upon centuries of blood feuds, and it all leads back to Xebel and Queen Mera.

Creative Team: Jeremy Adams (WRITER), John Timms (COVER), Daniel Bayliss (ART), Rex Lokus (COLORS), and Dave Sharpe (LETTERS).
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
The Story:
We are given a chance to head back to our main storyline that deals with Mera’s sudden return. Jeremy does an incredible job intertwining her story and what is being done below in the ocean while teasing the reader with the events taking place in DC K.O. #3. I love that Adams dives a bit into Mera’s upbringing and how Xebel and its people were shunned and imprisoned by Atlantis, thus causing rifts and feuds with the kingdoms below. However, something more is taking shape, which brings this story into heart-pounding moments of action and mystery that will fill you with a lot of questions that I, for one, cannot wait to get answers to.
The Art and Letters:
Daniel Bayless takes over the main art on this issue, with Rex still doing a wonderful job capturing the many bright and vibrant colors that we have come to expect on this run. When we spend time with Mera as a child, there is an almost Disney-like aspect to how the world is drawn, and it takes us back to that feeling of being a child again, when we had so much curiosity.
One detail that stood out to me was a panel showing Mera as a child that transitions into her as an adult, and yet the eyes remained mostly the same throughout the transition. She has a fierce blueness to them that pierces cold into the reader. As the chase sequence unfolds and we go through a sunken aircraft carrier I appreciated the details in the art as it shows it had been there for a while and the damage war had left it before sinking. Dave’s lettering keeps in line with the rising mystery and tensions building throughout this issue as well.
Final Thoughts:
Aquaman #13 teases Arthur’s status in the tournament while taking us back to our main story, which thrusts into chaos and action with Mera. I cannot continue to recommend this run enough!
Overall Grade: 9.5/10
