The Story

With Immortal Legends Nightwing and Robin by his side, Batman must return to the place he used to call home, Gotham. In the citywide planet of Gotham, Batman and the others arrive to his safe house, which has been stripped, searched, and stolen from. What Batman didn’t realize was that this was a trap. Pulling a silent alarm when they arrived, the heroes are bombarded by soldiers who have their sights set on ending the Immortal Legends.

As the fight goes on, Batman takes one of the soldiers to brawl in the streets of Gotham. Batman gets the enemy down, but he doesn’t realize there’s a target on his head. Narrowly escaped death thanks to the help of Barbara Gordon, Batman gets the story on the shadow he’s seeking out from her.

According to Barbara, “Bruce Wayne” took back Thompkins Island from the public and turned it into a playground for the rich and powerful using the Wayne’s charitable programs and resources. Now that Immortal Legend Batman has the lead and he sees the evil of the shadow, all that’s left to do is for him to find the Shadow Bruce. With Nightwing and Robin by his side, he makes his way to Thompkins Island which turns out to be so much more than he bargained for.

The Writing

Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom continue the thrilling story of Immortal Legend Batman by bringing in a character that historically makes it his mission to ruin Batman’s life. The shadow Bruce is seeking out proves to be even more sinister and evil than he expected. With the energy at an all-time high, there are moments in Immortal Legend Batman #5 that really will surprise you. Higgins and Groom make it clear that Thompkins Island is so much more than an adult playground, but a breeding ground of resentment.

The Art

With a storyline that’s as thrilling as this one, the artwork has to match the vibe, and that’s exactly what the artists did. Given the amount of action throughout the comic, there are some absolutely gorgeous full page panels that are a work of art. The drawings of the characters were as beautiful as they’ve ever been, with a perfect juxtaposition of vibrant colors and the darker ones.

In my opinion this shows the best when on Thompkins Island, which has an interesting nightclub vibe to the whole island. When the fight starts on the island, the tone is changed quickly to something powerful and impactful which the artists perfectly captured. The lettering of the comic is inspired, all thanks to Becca Carey, who was able to capture so many different tones of the stories into the dialogue.

Final Thoughts

The stakes are higher than ever for Immortal Legend Batman, and the story gets your excitement as high as the stakes.
