Marvel Rivals Ignite #1:

This first issue is broken into three mini stories or battles if you will. “Demon Days” is Venom against Psylocke and is from Peach Momoko.
“TSUCHIGUMO” is The Punisher against Peni Parker and is from Yuji Kaku, while “Sounds of Victory” is Hela Vs. Luna Snow and is a Mitsuyasu Sakai story.

Creative Team:

WRITERS: Peach Momoko, Yuji Kaku,
Mitsuyasu Sakai

Artists: Peach Momoko, Yuji Kaku, Ryusei Yamada

Color Artists: Erick Arciniega

Letters: VC’s Joe Sabino and Ariana Maher

Publisher: MARVEL COMICS

The Art:

What can you say about Peach Momoko that hasn’t already been said. Aside from being an amazing human being, her art is undeniable. The water color style is something that brings impact and gravitas. Especially when it comes to Demon Days, a heartbreaking story that leads to the climax.

The art adds to the story also penned by Peach. This is also the first Marvel Comic I’ve read in the classic Manga style. It really is a special story.

As we move into TSUCHIGUMO, we get a really interesting backstory on the Japanese tale. Punisher is a defender in this tale and it’s good to see him in a new light and new surroundings. The art is action packed as is the short story. This is one where the battle takes place early on, thus the art is crucial as a plot device.

There’s a very different vibe as we head into Sounds of Victory. This story features Hela and her attempt to crush the people of YGGSGARD (or so we think…), but not if Luna Snow has something to say about it. Yet another vastly different art stye, but Yamada really makes an impact here. Another early battle where the action begins immediately, thus the art is beyond important to the story.

The Writing:

All three stories have similar styles for this compendium, but vastly differing mythologies and tones. My favorite has to be TSUCHIGUMO because of the collaboration and the trash talking that underly the entire story. It’s fun, inspiring and gives me all the feels.

The other two are also strong with Demon Days having a bit of a Western vibe to it, the lone hero hunting for answers, while Sounds of Victory feels like pure Manga.

Overall Grade: 9/10

A truly solid first issue and one that will keep the reader interested throughout. I can’t wait to see how this series builds and builds. Feels like we’re truly reading stories from a video game.
