For over 20 years, the town of Barrow, Alaska, thought the vampires were a myth used to scare them every year when the sun fell. Now, the vampires are back and wreaking havoc upon the town, killing everyone in their path. Unfortunately, for Jalen, vampires may soon be the least of his worries as the sins of his past are coming to Barrow as well.

Creative Team: Rodney Barnes (WRITER), Steve Niles (STORY CONSULTANT), Chris Shehan (ART and COVER pg 4-14, 17-26, 28-33, and 36-39), Maan House (ART pg 1-3, 15-16, 27, 34-35, and 40), Xenon Honchar (COLORS), and Alex Ray (LETTERS).
The Story:
Rodney is weaving two intriguing stories together, both tying important pasts together. Jalen’s story is incredibly intriguing, as there is something in Compton that he thought he left behind; people he loves are paying the price. The angle of the gang coming to Barrow is going to be a thrill between them and the vampires, and something unique story-wise. As for the town of Barrow, seeing the fear and the tenacity of these vampires brings a slow-building dread throughout the pages.
The Art and Letters:
Chris delivers a haunting cover image that leads into terrifying panels, met with violent and bloody imagery with the help of Xenon. Maan is capturing the roughness of Compton through the art and delivers an unease about Jalens’ past and where he comes from. There is a certain emotional sequence that plays out, invoking shock and awe. Overall, the art team extracts the horror elements from these panels and pages excellently.
Final Thoughts:
30 Days of Night Falling Sun #2 brings bloodshed and violence to this issue as chaos is just now starting. IDW Dark is nailing the horror elements and the brutality of this story, crafting their universe beautifully.
Overall Grade: 9.3/10
