Amazing Spider-Man #17:
This is the most Spider-Man book ever! Having discovered that Dr. Xanto was experimenting on sentient beings, Peter Parker gave up working with him to get stronger for his rematch with Hellgate, yet he wouldn’t give up on Xanto.
So all the while, Rocket and others want to leave this guy for dead, Peter has faith in him. But Peter is benefiting from his benevolence. He teamed up with Glitch, the sentient suit that has the potential to make him a match for Hellgate, to free the others, and it seems like there is a bond forming between the two.
This is the definition of “With great power must come great responsibility.” Peter has always been on point with his responsibility as Spider-Man.
Creative Team:
WRITER: Joe Kelly
Artist: Pepe Larraz
Color Artists: Marte Gracia
Letters: VC’s Joe Caramagna
Publisher: MARVEL COMICS
The Art:
Larraz has a really impactful style, and his ability to visually harness the character’s emotions within his pages is something unique and well executed.
Drawing Glitch, Rocket, Peter, and many other characters is a daunting task indeed, but he handles this visual orchestra flawlessly.
He’s also drawing scenes from an alien planet to boot, so Larraz is working on an iconic character, a few new characters, a new word, and a new supervillain and his posse. Yeah, that’s all in a day’s work!
AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #16 – A SACRIFICE LEADS TO AN ALLY
The Writing:
Joe Kelly is one of my favorite writers out there these days. It just so happens that he is working on THE hero of the Marvel Universe in his titular series.
The scene between Peter and Rae personifies Kelly and his writing. He brings out the true essence of Peter Parker and makes this man shine in ways we’ve seen for over six decades.
The sacrifice, the humanity, this IS the character this country needs now more than ever. A beacon of hope and someone kids, adults, and everyone can and should look up to.
Heck, back on Earth, even Norman Osborn has jumped on the Spidey bandwagon.
Overall Grade: 9.5/10
Joe Kelly is doing his best to make Spider-Man fans blow their eyes out, and guess what … it’s working, dammit. The flashbacks to his childhood, the unwillingness to ever trade lives if he can help it, this is Spider-Man through and through. We are all better off with an influence like this in our lives! Thank you, Joe.
Up next… a return to the greatest city in the world!
