MR. TERRIFIC YEAR ONE #6: The Harder They Fall

Published:

Athena Prescott has had enough and has now taken matters into her own hands to ensure the gateway for her father, Darkseid, is opened. Mr. Terrific and Black Lightning may be the only heroes that stand between Athena achieving her goal and saving the world. It’s time for Mr. Terrific to become truly Terrific.

Mr. Terrific Year One #6. Credit DC Comics. Cover by Karen Darboe.

Creative Team: Al Letson (WRITER), Valentine De Landro (ART), Marissa Louise (COLORS PG 1-16), Edwin Galmon (ART PG 16-20), Lucas Gattoni (LETTERS), and Karen Darboe (COVER).

The Story:

Al brings triumph and heroism to Mr. Terrific and his origin story. What Al does to make Michael stand out is how brave he is, no matter who or what he is taking on. Granny Goodness brings her army to Earth, and he stands tall with Black Lightning to send them back and close the portal. You feel how massive the stakes are in this story and how vital it is to close this portal. However, true heroism appears in various forms, and I love how Al makes the effort to show us how Bruce and Michael bring hope to their respective communities. The teaser we get at the very end has me on the hook, and I hope we can continue.

The Art and Letters:

Karen’s cover alone entices me to dive into this book with how many variations in colors and detail in the distortion there is. Athena has embraced this energy to open the portal, which has distorted her body, and Karen captures what’s coming on this cover. Inside the panels and splash pages get insanely trippy as Valentine and Marissa use these yellows and purples and pinks to show the energy building up as Michael and Black Lightning race against time. When Granny Goodness steps out of the open portal, there is a strong 80s vibe, and the various parademons are truly frightening. Edwin continues the vibe as we see Athena and how she stands out in the final pages, telling us our story is not quite finished yet.

Final Thoughts:

Mr. Terrific Year One #6 captures what it means to be a hero to perfection and showcases Michael Holt as he transforms himself into a figure of hope. Al, Edwin, Marissa, Valentine, and Lucas do an amazing job bringing us closer to this character, and I hope we continue to get more!
