Marvel Comics showed up BIG at New York Comic Con

Published:

This past weekend the Javits Center was full of fans geeking out over their favorite fandoms, including Marvel Comics. While I didn’t attend every Marvel Comics panel at New York Comic Con (NYCC), these are the fun facts and announcements I did get throughout the long weekend.

Wolverine with Benjamin Percy

I went from the airport (still dragging my suitcase) straight to a panel about deconstructing Wolverine with Benjamin Percy, and hosted by Jules Chin Greene. I have loved Percy’s version of Wolvie, so this was a must for me, and it did not disappoint. After first being introduced to Wolverine as a kid through the Patch comics, Percy has now written the most stories that have involved Wolverine, ever… second to Chris Claremont (who shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon). This includes the stories he has written for the podcasts, Wolverine: The Long Night and Wolverine: The Lost Trail. The podcast was actually the first time he had ever written for Wolverine.

Percy explained he loves the stories where one person is at stake, not the world. He also explained, that his Wolvie is more, “rough and tumble” than Hollywood’s. When first writing him for the podcast, he said he wanted the audience to be scared of him. He went on to explain that Wolverine can’t be happy because he’s defined by pain.

For anyone learning to write comics, Percy had some good tips as well when writing an already established character. He said he likes to look at the legacy but with a new spin, and then fill in the gaps of the story. Like mosaic tiles. When asked what’s a Wolverine story he’d like to do one day, he said a Western, or a Savage Land story.

Honoring Joshua Cassara

When asked who is his favorite Wolverine artist he has worked with, he paused for a minute and nodded saying, Joshua Cassara. He recently passed at the age of only 46. He was honored with a booth at NYCC in artist alley, and Percy pointed to his Wolverine pin on his shirt, and said that was Cassara’s art.

The new Editor-In Chief, Stephen Wacker, hosted this panel. He said there will be no more 5 issue stories. Instead, stories will take as long as they need. Also in reference to the Marvel move that has recently been in the news, Wacker said that “New York will always be the heart of Marvel Comics.” He also announced some upcoming Marvel Comics.

  • Uncanny Excellence with Gail Simone. The ongoing Uncanny X-Men run will see Sarah Gaunt is back! Xavier has married and is off planet, so Sarah decides she’ll get her revenge on his students. She’s experimenting on mutants and making very messed Wolverines. Some without healing powers, some with claws that don’t retract, and more.

Manga Marvel Covers

Next the crowd was shown many different Manga style covers. Marvel has teamed up with Kadokawa, and we got a glimpse of a few of them.

Hope Assembles

The panel wrapped with Kevin Smith coming out to hype up his upcoming Star Wars / Marvel crossover comic. He says this comic will be in continuity, and many important matters were discussed. Such as, can a light saber cut through adamantium? While he did not answer the question, it looks as if we may be finally getting an answer to that question soon.
