Fantastic Four/Gargoyles #1 – A Meeting Of The Minds

Published:

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I’m going to be reviewing a HUGE moment in comics! Yes that’s right! Goliath’s clan of Gargoyles are crossing over and meeting Marvel’s first family in The Fantastic Four!

This is a team up that I never really considered when I thought of who I’d like to see Gargoyles team up with. However the more I think about it, the more it makes sense! We so often see how the general public reacts to the Gargoyles in the animated series, and there’s no way anyone on the Fantastic Four would do that. So just what is in store for this cross over? Let’s jump into it!

Fantastic Four/Gargoyles #1 by Greg Weisman (Writer), Enid Balam (Artist), Raul Angulo (Color Artist) & VC’s Joe Caramanga (Letterer) is truly one of the best crossover comics I’ve ever read, and is one that I would love to see more of in the future.

The Story

You know when Greg Weisman is writing the story for the issue that it’s going to be a great one, and this one is no different. It had such a familiar feel to long time fans of Weisman’s work and it works spectacularly. There are so many meetings in this issue that I had never thought of before that I really want to see more of.

Tony Stark & David Xanatos is chiefly among the two I would pay handsomely to see more of. Watching them go toe to toe with their wits is an absolute joy to read. Plus you have the Fantastic Four and Goliath’s clan of Gargoyles which is just an absolutely joy to read.

The story is equal parts science and the magic you’re used to from Gargolyes. It works so incredibly well, and the story feels like something I would’ve loved to have seen on a Saturday morning as a kid. The good news is we have it now, and it’s a true joy to read from start to finish.

The Artwork

Enid Balam & Raul Angulo really stepped up to the task of artwork in this issue and they exceeded my expectations. I have high expectations when it comes to anything Gargoyles. It’s a franchise I’ve been a fan of for as long as I can remember, and that’s going back over 30 years now. Enid & Raul both did a fantastic job with bringing the Gargoyles to the page in this issue.

FINAL POINT: Greg Weisman & the entire creative team truly did an outstanding job with the issue. It really feels like something I would’ve watched on a Saturday morning with a bowl of cereal as I sat in front of my TV. It checked off boxes I didn’t even know I had, and exceeded my expectations on every level. Seriously, you will not regret picking up this issue.

Overall Grade: 10/10
