Texarcanum #3 Bad Luck Brings Good Fortune

Published:

Avery Belle is old. Much, much older than he looks. He’s seen it all and then some. That’s put to the test when he attends a wedding that’s interrupted by the release of a Chinese Water Dragon! Avery will have to dig deep into his bag of tricks to survive the attack and find a way to put an end to this deadly family feud. Texarcanum continues!

Texarcanum Brings the East to the West

I love the opening of this book. Avery Belle has been a bit of a mystery up till now. We know that he has Supernatural powers and that he had weird history. Now we see where he came from and the terrible deal he made for life and longevity. Even better, it connects to a piece of history that was hinted to us in a previous issue. The story is staring to come full circle and the character arc grows deeper.

In Case You Missed It: Texarcanum #2 A Family Feud Leaves Evil in it’s Wake

Christopher Monfette really does a great job of layering this story with every issue. The lore just gets deeper and deeper, while still having a “monster of the week” in each issue. It helps that those monsters are tied to this historic family feud that has almost wiped out both bloodlines. The character development and plot development run parallel and add dynamic that just grabs your attention and leaves you wanting more, in a good way.

The supernatural element to the story and theme are the best part. It’s always great to see worldly myths and legends show up in these niche settings. Not only does he introduce this “monsters”, he does it in settings that appropriate and fit the narrative. High marks on capturing the spirit of the traditions.

The Art of Texarcanum

The artwork lends itself to good horror, but also takes the fantasy aspect to the next level! Miguel Martos gives us a beautiful and yet terrifying dragon. The cover alone is worth the price of admission! The East Asian influences are definitely there, and that is a big plus. I love the water effects and the way he lays out the action in a step by step flow.

Overall Grade 9.5/10

Action, story, characters, and everything else balances so well in this issue. Belle’s clever tricks and use of magic is fun to behold. The dragon design is top notch and the violence edges on gore. I’m really loving the breadcrumbs to Avery’s past and the way it’s woven between flashbacks, and current events. This is book for fans of myths, legends, and the supernatural. Don’t miss out on this one!
