‘Gen V’ Season 2 Ep. 5 “The Kids Are Not Alright”

Published:

It’s a fresh new school year at Godolkin U. From the world of ‘The Boys,’ ‘GEN V‘ season 2 has kicked off the fall semester with a lotta blood, more allies, a new creepy Dean, and a lot more questions. This new year is looking promising. Episode 5 just dropped on Prime Video, and Dean Cipher just got a whole lot creepier.

WARNING: While this review is spoiler free for episode 5 of season 2, everything that has come before is about as safe as a garden gnome at Dean Cipher’s. NOT SAFE. Spoilers ahead for previous episodes.

Last Seen on ‘Gen V’

While the kids are now “free” they’re being forced to live very scripted lives. While not all on the same page, they did all sense something off about Dean Cipher immediately. They thought they finally had him all figured out when Marie couldn’t sense V in his blood. However, at ‘The Blood Bender VS. The Gender Bender‘ match he proved more powerful than they could have imagined. Thereby foiling their plans to take him down.

Throughout this series, this group of Godolkin U students have done nothing but attempt to cut the metaphorical strings Godolkin U has so tightly wrapped around them all. Yet, now they learn they can literally be played like marionette puppets.

‘GEN V’ Season 2 Episode 5: “The Kids Are Not Alright”

While our ragtag group of Godolkin U students lick their wounds at a failed attempt to take down Dean Cipher, a new plan comes into play. One they have little faith in, but must try. It goes as they expect, but with surprises left and right. Dean Cipher is once again a step or ten ahead of Marie. He can pull her strings without even using his powers. Cipher also has a new “partner” in crime. One he’s mixing business and pleasure with.

However, it’s not just the kids Cipher is messing with. He’s onto Polarity and shows dominance in a bizarre and off the wall way that made me jump. We wrap up with another surprise that Cipher carefully planned in another attempt to win over Marie, at any twisted cost.

New Year, New Dean

The introduction of Hamish Linklater as Dean Cipher has brought such a chaotic and creepy element to season 2, in the absolute best way possible. The way he can switch demeanors so perfectly to go from inspiring school Dean to psychopath, makes every scene he’s in completely engaging. You never seem to know what he’ll say or do next. This episode really highlighted just how out there his character is, which just makes him seem all that much more dangerous.

Overall Grade: 9/10

I love when the characters are so completely self aware as to how f***** they are. That seems to be where our Godolkin U top students are, but they’re not giving up. Lizzie Broadway, as Emma, adds so much to every scene she’s in. From her bluntness to her one liners (the weird Barbie line got me laughing aloud). It’s like she’s watching along with the audience, while also fighting the good fight.

In addition, to the new plan, and surprise guests, Sam had a great storyline in this episode. One he deserved, and one that I was very happy went against what I was expecting. The kids are clearly not alright, but ‘Gen V’ season 2 is killing it.
