IMMORTAL LEGEND BATMAN #2 by Kyle Higgins, Mat Groom, Erica D’Urso, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain, Igor Monti & Becca Carey (DC COMICS) continues its’ epic vision of the Dark Knight.
Ken (N.I. Editor In Chief/ODPH Podcast) and I (Megan – Vigilante Vibes podcast) is on the call for this issue. Let’s see how the Elseworlds series plays out now. *** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
HOW WAS THE STORY?
KEN: Even in space, the elements of crime never veer off track. A simple space train robbery is normal in these parts of the galaxy. The writing stages the play as a very traditional lead. It doesn’t take long for events to take a turn for the worst.
One robber stands out amongst the crowd. Readers watch as he holds court on all those in attendance with force. It shouldn’t take long to decipher who this rogue truly is.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
Readers see another character of Bat-lore make their entrance here. The conversation with Pennyworth and Wayne is very classic in delivery. It is one that reveals the self-doubt Batman still carries. Once events jump back, the story leads into the real endgame. Action sequences pick up as all secrets come to light.
Once the villain identity is revealed, the main event begins. Readers watch as the combat is very straight-forward. It leads to a thunderous conclusion. The epilogue teases more of the mystery surrounding the lead. It’s a great compliment to a superb read.
MEGAN: What begins as a seemingly routine encounter with lane pirates quickly spirals into something far more dangerous than the unsuspecting passengers anticipated. Expecting a quick payoff and safe passage, the people aboard the space train are blindsided when the pirates demand more than just credits—they want the entire ship, planning to dismantle it for parts. But their leader isn’t satisfied with a simple heist; he craves violence, even if his crew doesn’t fully support his brutality. It’s a bold, explosive opening that highlights just how big Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom are willing to go right from the start.
Jumping back in time to three days prior, we see just how Batman is involved with this heist of the lane pirates, which sets up a beautiful bit of continuity throughout the book. Working outside of his Batman persona, Bruce proves he’s so much more than his ulterior motive. With Bruce’s plan in action, we get to see who the main villain is, which is one of the many characters in Immortal Legend Batman #2 that come from the long line of Batman lore.
LET’S TALK ART & LETTERING!
KEN: D’Urso and Monti craft some amazong images for this chapter. The space robbery set-up is filled with tension. It never ecapes the reader’s mind of what is happening. A full page shot welcomes the thieves into the scene. This is matched with anothe rfull shot of their leader. The scene pops off as the dialogue moves into their immediate issue. There’s plenty of brutality unloading here. Carey’s lettering makes this panels jump off the pages.
Once the story swings to Batman, the mood heads towards a more reflective phase. The art shows the wear in his face as he contemplates moves. This doesn’t last long as his mission comes back into lead. The action scenes comes fast and energetic. It’s becoming a trademark of this series. The main villain reveal gets a tremendous full page shot. Readers sit ringside as the fight goes full throttle. The art exemplifies the wild action. It caps off with a triumphant full page shot.
Mora and Bonvillain’s epilogue follows this same winning formula. It supports the level D’Urso and Monti established. Readers have much to rave about on each page.
MEGAN: There’s not enough words to explain how good the artwork is in Immortal Legend Batman #2. With the artists capturing the space cowboy vibe along with the Batman lore we all know and love, I’d say they’ve created the perfect mash up of the two.
Igor Monti and Tamra Bonvillain really shined in the second issue with their work on the colors. Their combined talents elevated the artwork to a level unheard of, and brought power to each page. Along with the colorists, Erica D’Urso and Dan Mora were the artists of the comic, and didn’t fade from the quality of the first issue in the least bit. I didn’t think the artwork could get any better than the first issue of Immortal Legend Batman, but I’m happy to eat my words.
OVERALL GRADE: 9.5/10
KEN: 9.3 Immortal Legend Batman takes action undercover in its’ latest issue. Higgins and Groom throw ILB into uncharted territory with their writing. The art is phenomenal on every page you turn. There is no sophomore slump here. This Batman story is one that should have your undivided attention. CLICK HERE FOR MORE CONTENT FROM KEN
MEGAN: 9.7 This is a Batman story that was written with the fans in mind. I cannot recommend Immortal Legend Batman enough. Kyle Higgins and Mat Groom are all gas when it comes to Immortal Legend Batman, and make it very obvious that they have no plans on slowing down. CLICK HERE FOR MORE FROM MEGAN!
