The Mortal Thor #2 – A MORTAL Question of true Identity

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I’m going to be reviewing the 2nd issue of The Mortal Thor from Marvel Comics!

In the 1st issue we were introduced to a man named Sigurd who looks a lot like Thor, but isn’t totally Thor (at least not yet). He got into a spot of trouble with Roxxon and promptly handled business in a dark alley. But what will come from those actions? Let’s jump into it!

The Mortal Thor #2 by Al Ewing (Writer), Pasqual Ferry (Artist), Matt Hollingsworth (Color Artist), VC’s Joe Sabino (Letterer) is a great continuation from the first issue that continues to deliver!

The Story

Things pick up right where the first issue left off, and they get started quickly! Sigurd is escorted back to his apartment by his “riddle friend” and is dropped off at his neighbors. The budding romance between Kristin & Sigurd is sure to be something to keep an eye on, as well as their mischievous “riddle friend”.

MORE MORTAL THOR!

Once Sigurd decides to follow a lead he picked up from the members of a motorcycle gang he beat up in the last issue is where things really pick up. It’s a great action sequence that feels very Thor-like without involving any of the traditional tropes you’re used to with a Thor fight.

Oh, and there is the final panel to. I’m not going to spoil it here, but it’s for sure going to have people talking about it for sure. It’s a great surprise that I never would’ve expected to happen. The next issue should be extremely interesting to read.

The Artwork

Pasqual Ferry & Matt Hollingsworth both did a fantastic job with this issue. It’s got a unique feel to it that helps it stand out when you read it, and it really compliments the story so well. The fight sequence in the second half of the issue is particularly great. Despite not having the usual ways to go about a Thor fight, they gave it a familiar feel to it.

FINAL POINT: Al Ewing continues to pen what might be the most compelling Thor story in some time. Take away the abilities, the costume and the friends and what kind of Thor do you have? It’s that question that Al Ewing is answering now, and if you’re not reading this you need to get on that ASAP!

Overall Grade: 9.0/10
