DC has had a turbulent history but none more so than the late 80s all the way through to the early 00’s. This time period brought about an immense period of change as Barry Allen is here for our latest history lesson.

Creative Team:
Mark Waid (WRITER), Dan Jurgens (ARTIST), Doug Mahnke (ARTIST), John Kallisz (COLORS), David Baron (COLORS), Todd Klein (LETTERS), Chris Samnee and Giovanna Niro (COVER).

The Story:
Mark Waid has a very talented and gifted way of weaving this often confusing history together in a manner that is easy to follow. This period of DC had a lot going on. It covers Batman breaking the League’s trust and his back & Barbara Gordon being paralyzed.

The time is also Hal Jordan going evil, Superman dying, and so much more. He covers it all with just enough detail to understand what is going on without confusing those who may not be too familiar with the past.
The Art:
The art team is doing some insanely incredible work with this issue. They capture each time period and its vibe perfectly. Superman’s long hair and black suit, and the various choices that were made, especially in the 90s, are vibrantly displayed throughout the panels.
There are some gorgeous moments that are allowed to breathe as well, such as Batman being broken by Bane and Superman fighting Doomsday. The team was able to nail the shocking moment Barbara was shot by the Joker as well making this issue a visual standout in the series for me.
Overall Grade: 10/10
New History of the DC Universe #3 brings us into some violent and turbulent time periods for our heroes as they are put to their extremes. The entire team is doing an incredible job at capturing these monumental moments in history. Make sure to grab this book and the whole series to understand the full history!
