The Story

After Illyana had a sneaking suspicion that the people of The Society of Eternal Dawn were not to be trusted, her instincts were proven right. One of the Society’s Exemplars shows up to try to take out Magik, Dani, and Liminal, so the fight is now on.

Illyana, AKA Magik, transports her team to Las Vegas to get them to safety, but that only gives them a minute before Lexi shows up.

Lexi shows up and has a few tricks up her sleeves, tricks that look a lot like a dragon. Together, Dani and Illyana are able to defeat Lexi, but they’re still enemies of The Society of Eternal Dawn. That’s a huge problem since they have to go back to the Society’s headquarters if they ever want to help Cal. Now, they have to go back and fight the Embodiment herself.

In the Society of Eternal Dawn, we see more attention on Dani rather than Illyana, which I think made the situation hit that much harder in the story. It also hammered down the point ever more of how well Dani and Illyana work together, and that they are very much in this together.

With how much chaos has happened in this comic run, I’m disappointed to see it’ll be concluded in the next issue. Ashley Allen consistently impresses when writing Illyana, and Magik #9 is so exception.

The Art

Germán Peralta and Matt Horak are the artists of Magik #9, and they bring a lot of heat to the pages of the comic. There are quite a few really great action sequences that were drawn in a way that made you feel like you were in the action with Illyana and Dani.

Along with Peralta and Horak, Arthur Hesli handles the colors and really captures the magic that comes with the characters. I think Hesli’s talents really shined brightly when Dani and Illyana were back at the Society, in the custody of the Embodiment. There was a great juxtaposition of contrasting colors that made the panels feel even more powerful than they already were.

Final Thoughts

Another great addition to the Magik comic run, all thanks to Ashley Allen and the rest of the creative team.

Overall Grade – 8.4/10
