The Story:

It’s the West Coast Avengers’ final stand against Ultron the Scorched. With Ultron’s life on the line, can the team pull together and save him? And, will this team of former villains and heroes have been worth the effort after all?

The Writing:

Gerry Duggan has done it again. If someone had told me when this series started that I would feel genuine concern and care for Ultron of all characters, I would have said they were crazy. However, during this issue I got emotional over the fate of a character that has been my favorite Avengers villain since I was a kid. On top of the emotional beats with Ultron, the wrap up of the entire story with Killerwatt’s fate, the set up for what’s to come with Flag-Smasher, and even Wonder Man’s mission to save Killerwatt’s father was a master class of how all loose ends should be tied up in a story.

The Art:

The incredible art team of Danny Kim and Arthur Hesli turned in another phenomenal issue. The action, emotion, and spectacle on display were all perfectly executed. Each version of Ultron was distinct and beautifully realized, and the conclusion to that conflict is an image I won’t forget any time soon. The real stand out moment for me comes near the end of the issue in a moment when Tony Stark’s obsessive tendencies are on full display. Just a few beautiful panels dedicated to the toll this story took on Iron Man were so impactful that they really drove home the message of redemption at the heart of this story.

Overall Grade:10/10

The perfect end to the perfect Avengers story. This issue wrapped up every plot point while doubling down on the message that even the worst villain can change given the opportunity. This has been, without a doubt, the best Avengers story in years!
