The Story and Writing
With Liminal taking over Cal’s body, Illyana will do anything to ensure that Cal’s soul is still somewhere safe and sound in his own body. That means even accepting a mission from the Society of the Eternal Dawn’s leader, the Embodiment, that could very well save Cal. The problem is that Illyana doesn’t exactly trust the Society or the Embodiment.
The other problem is that Illyana and Dani have been on the outs and haven’t been seeing eye to eye. It’s starting to have an impact on the mission and will put them in danger if something isn’t solved between the two mutants.
Ashley Allen continues this exciting journey of Illyana, and this time, we get to see even more of Liminal. It’s interesting having Liminal with Illyana and Dani as if he’s apart of the team, but it’s even more interesting when he’s actually helping. With Liminal clearly up to something, and Illyana working on her relationship with Dani, I can’t wait to see what Ashley Allen brings in the next issue of Magik.
The Art
Matt Horak joins the creative team of Magik #8, and does it in a big way. In this issue, we see art like we haven’t seen before in Illyana’s journey. When Illyana, Dani, and Liminal break into the HQ of the Scarlet Eye, they’re met with some pretty outlandish illusions once they make their attack. These illusions are as unhinged as they are crazy, and Horak made sure they leave their mark in the comic.
With Arthur Hesli on colors, and Ariana Maher on letters, there wasn’t much to dislike in Magik #8. Quite the opposite, there was so much to like, and the creative team did their job to make sure your eyes stayed hooked onto each page.
Final Thoughts
Magik continues to be an exciting and dark journey for Illyana, and now alongside Dani and Liminal. I look forward to seeing what comes next!
