The Story and Writing
In the dead of night, Corina Ellis and Captain Ezra stop at a roadside diner for a cup of coffee. Even though the server, a beautiful mutant with unique skin named Uva, insists that the diner is closed, Ellis is adamant about her coffee and muffin. Noticing the girl is uneasy and nervous, Ellis quickly changes her tune to wanting to take her coffee to go. When asked about this by Captain Ezra, Ellis says that there’s a robbery going on, and that girl is being held hostage. In true Corina Ellis form, she says it’s not their problem, and leaves her there to remain a hostage.
With a surprise visit from Deadpool and Outlaw that started out on a more rocky start with the Outliers, it turns out that those keeping Uva hostage hired Deadpool. Deadpool and Outlaw’s job was to keep the X-Men busy while they attacked the diner, but they went to warn them instead.
Gail Simone, as usual, has so many factors going on in one story, and is able to write them with perfect balance. With Uva being held hostage, Deadpool and Outlaw coming to town, and the mayor now wanting to make plans for the mutants, there’s never a dull moment in the Uncanny X-Men world. The ending was handled expertly, with the right amount of action and heart that Simone always brings into her stories.
The Art
David Marquez is back as the artist on The Uncanny X-Men #19, and he makes his entrance in a big way. There were so many great looks inside the comic, but some of my favorites have to do with the powersets of the X-Men. I’m a sucker for big powerset looks, and I think Marquez nailed it with Deathdream and Jubilee. Along with Marquez, Matthew Wilson handled the colors expertly, which is no surprise. Together, Marquez, Wilson, and Clayton Cowles who handled the lettering, continue to impress with their work on The Uncanny X-Men.
Final Thoughts
Another day, another banger of a comic from Gail Simone.
