The Story and Writing

The world is still reeling from the movie, “Murder Me, Mutina”, and the mutants have felt all of that blowback. With society leaning heavily into spreading bigotry and hatred at the expense of the mutants of the world, the X-Men have felt the brunt of it all. All of them except Nightcrawler, who has received kindness and support from MacKenzie. DeNeer because he saved her daughter from getting hit by an incoming car.

MacKenzie made a public announcement along with the major that their town is now and will always be a safe place for the mutants. Along with that, they also announced that they’ll be having their first ever Friendship Fest, a festival to show their kinship with the mutants of the town. The mutants are understandably hesitant, as they haven’t experienced true kindness from many, but they’re willing to give it a chance.

While there’s the threat of Mutina hovering the X-Men, and the heaviness of the bigotry from the public, Gail Simone created a comic that was heartfelt and filled with sincere moments. From moments like Gambit waking up in the middle of the night to help Calico to the X-Men being welcomed like celebrities at the festival, The Uncanny X-Men #18 pulls at your heartstrings.

The Art

Of course, with Luciano Vecchio being the artist on the comic, you’re guaranteed to not be able to take your eyes from the pages. With his excellent use of detail, along with Rachelle Rosenberg’s fantastic talent on the colors, the artists hit every single right cord to make this a comic full of emotion and depth. Speaking of emotion, I feel it’s not said enough how talented Vacchio is at illustrating emotion with his characters. In The Uncanny X-Men #18, you can clearly feel the energy from the characters, such as the fear from Calico, or the concern from Gambit. Another fantastic job from the artists!

Final Thoughts

What I love so much about Gail Simone’s writing and what she’s done with The Uncanny X-Men is that every issue has a completely different vibe, yet they all mesh together well and share the same high quality. The Uncanny X-Men #18 was very different from the other issues, and it was a breath of fresh air in a world that takes pleasure in hating mutants.
