Let’s Break it All Down:
Mark Waid has a poetic way of telling this often convoluted story in such a clear and concise manner. He dives into the messy and often confusing lore behind the countless amount of heroes and villains alike that with the help of Todd and his letters doesn’t confuse us as to what is going on at any moment. The book kicks off with our big heroes that we know and love such as Superman, Batman, Flash, and others then begins to dive in the teams and villains and messy history.
The art team is assisting in a heavy way with how epic and clear the storytelling is at the very same time. There is a tremendous amount of variation as we move through the years, and they made sure to include some of the most iconic costumes that accompanied the most famous storylines. We see Batman standing tall with his top off and sword in the forefront, the rogue galleries of our heroes and their transformations over the years, the future heroes who take up different mantles, and how they started. Every character doesn’t lack detail or color in any way, which is a massively impressive undertaking.
They chose to leave off with the Crisis event and the final page being Clark holding a dead Kara in his arms, as Flash is moving so fast that he dies as well. The art in this page is emotional and brings out a lot of feelings, even as Mark casually has Barry telling us that he died as well. Even though we know these characters will be back I was still gripped by the story.
Final Thoughts:
New History of the DC Universe #2 is a must-read. The history of comics can be confusing, and yet the way this is being told breaks everything down in a way we can easily understand. The artwork stuns and shines as it brings a flurry of emotions with every panel.
Overall Grade: 10/10
