The Story
Gathered all together to mourn the fall of the nation of Krakoa, mutants from all different walks of life show their support and celebrate what they still have. Krakoa, a living island that served as a safe island for mutants, was destroyed by a sneak attack as the result of an anti-mutant agenda. Now, a year later, the mutant community stands together to remember the nation of Krakoa, and all that it stood for.

The fall of Krakoa dramatically changed the mutant world forever, changing the stories of the mutants we’ve all come to know. We’ve gotten so many new X-stories after the Krakoa era, and this comic serves as a great reflection on where the mutants are now. While we see where the road from Krakoa has taken the X-Men, we also get some really interesting looks into the future. There are some great setups that we can expect to see play out in the upcoming X-Stories provided by the writers of X-Men: Hellfire Vigil #1.
The Writing
What I think makes this such a powerful comic is the fact that every writer from each of the mutant stories of Marvel Comics came together for this. You have Gail Simone, who’s given us the new Uncanny X-Men run, you have Eve L. Ewing, who has been behind the newest Exceptional X-Men run, and so many more insanely talented writers involved with this.
Each portion that comes from a different writer blends very well with each other, but also has a completely different vibe. Each one of the writers put their own personal flare on their portions of the story, causing their writing personalities to shine through.
Bringing together the entire roster of writers for this era of Marvel’s mutants paid off as X-Men: Hellfire Vigil #1 was as beautifully written as it was powerful.
The Art
Along with the large roster of writers, all are accompanied by artists that have worked on these X-Stories. You have Roi Mercado, who’s worked on Stephanie Phillips’ Phoenix, or Marcus To, who worked on Geoffrey Thorne’s X-Force, or Luciano Vecchio, who’s done fantastic work on several X-Men projects. All top tier artists who have put their own stamp into the stories of the X-Men characters showed up for X-Men: Hellfire Vigil #1, and went above and beyond.
There’s something special about all of these artists coming together to contribute to the comic book, that gives a great look at how these characters and their stories have progressed. Since the fall of Krakoa, we’ve seen so many different stories illustrated in many different styles by these incredibly talented artists. And now, we get to see them all come together to celebrate the journey from the Krakoan Era to where we are now in From the Ashes.
Final Thoughts
X-Men: Hellfire Vigil #1 was a beautifully put-together comic with talent from all across the board. Seeing all the writers and artists from the mutant stories I’ve loved since the end of Krakoa come together on one event was spectacular, to say the least. Hats off to everyone who worked on X-Men: Hellfire Vigil #1!

I love the Hellfire Vigil. It was reminiscent of the past Hellfire Galas (save the disaster and destruction in the last one). It was their time to remember, and the first part being told through Kamala’s POV felt like it circled back to her appearance in the Third Hellfire Gala.
