Spring is Sprung in The Seasons #5

I keep hoping things will start to look up for Spring Seasons and boy do they just keep getting worse! The carnival is growing and their influence is spreading. Summer is under their spell. Winter is still lashing out. Now Spring has run right into enemy territory and what she finds there is both a relief and a terrible twist!

The Dynamic Between Spring and Winter

Rick Remender has been working hard to develop the characters of the sisters with focus on Spring and Winter, who couldn’t be more different. That clash of personalities and viewpoints adds a dynamic layer to the mystery of the carnival and the mystique of The Season’s family. In this issue Winter’s insecurities and anger with how life has turned out are on full display. This drives Spring away even further and puts her in serious danger.

Pulling the Curtain Back a Little More in The Seasons #5

We also get more pieces to the Season’s family puzzle beyond Winter and Spring. Summer’s obsession with the magical mirror show’s her need for attention. We get more of the mystery of the Season’s parents. Autumn even makes another appearance! It’s like a breadcrumb trail on the way to something either great or absolutely terrible!

The Seasons #3 Evil Gets Caught in the Act!

Remender also gives us a glimpse behind the carnival curtain. There is a powerful magic within the tent. It’s beautiful and dangerous. It’s everything anyone could ever want and yet it’s also Hell. There are layers of illusions and larger than life settings. It’s whimsical and dark, much like Spring is Alice in Wonderland.

The Classical Art of The Seasons #5

The artwork of Paul Azaceta and Matheus Lopes is phenomenal as always. They haven’t missed a beat in this series. In this issue they get to play around with the magical interior of the carnival. Azaceta makes everything look so big and imposing. He also plays around with the various setting of the rooms, from natural environments to modern penthouse skylines to dungeons. Each of this environments capture a range of emotions ranging from comfort to fear.

The color palettes are the perfect companion to the tones of the story. With so many bright pastels and warm colors, the use of black becomes so striking. The shadows are so much more intimidating. With so many different settings, colors change to represent the environment. Some are cold and lonely and some are warm and inviting. All of them are executed perfectly.

Overall Grade 9.3/10

The Season’s continues to be a thrilling build to a classic mystery. Spring’s character development is perfectly done and add to the stakes of everything going on around her. The carnival is wonder to explore. Beautiful scenes in dynamic backgrounds make for a page turner! Each panel feels like a work of art. The story is so deep and interesting. Fans of things like Johnny Quest, Scooby-Doo, and Nancy Drew need to catch up with this one!
