Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! And this week I’m going to be reviewing the FIRST issue in the new Doctor Aphra miniseries from Marvel Comics!
Doctor Aphra was created by author Kieron Gillen, and first appeared in the 2015 issue of Darth Vader #3! She quickly became one of the most popular characters in modern Star Wars. She’s ambitious, and not afraid to do what she needs to get what she wants. So with that said, let’s jump into it!

Star Wars Doctor Aphra: Chaos Agent #1 by Cherish Chen (Writer), Gabriel Guzman (Artist), Mike Atiyeh (Color Artist), Joe Caramagna (Letterer) & E.J. Su (Cover Artist) is a solid start to this miniseries.
The Story
Cherish Chen pens a great story to start things off for the first issue. First, we get an update on what’s been going on with Dr. Aphra, and she’s been sentenced for a litany of crimes. And astonishingly she gets off on supervised parole!
What follows is a great story that pits her together with none other than Luke Skywalker and sent on a mission to find a powerful gauntlet that’s said to harness a powerful energy source. And from here the issue feels like a classic story that you might read on a Saturday morning eating a bowl of cereal.
I really loved the set up of the gauntlet, and what it did. You don’t really see something like that too much in Star Wars, so it was nice to see something new and unique in Star Wars. The issue is a nice, easy story that doesn’t try to do too much. And that totally works in it’s favor.
The Artwork
Gabriel Guzman & Mike Atiyeh do a phenomenal job with the artwork in the issue. I particularly liked the effect the gauntlet gave off. Again, it’s a new and unique item in Star Wars & it was really cool to see such a different look to how it works. Also the lines & how good the characters look was great too.
FINAL POINT: There’s a lot of Star Wars comics out right now, and if you’re not keeping up with them all you need to make a point to read this one. It’s a fun, light read that doesn’t get too serious and sets up nicely for the next two issues. Chen’s great writing, along with Guzman & Atiyeh’s artwork make this a fun issue to read from start to finish.
Overall Grade: 8/10
